וְדָוִ֛יד זָקֵ֥ן וְשָׂבַ֖ע יָמִ֑ים וַיַּמְלֵ֛ךְ אֶת שְׁלֹמֹ֥ה בְנ֖וֹ עַל יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

KJVSo when David was old and full of days, he made Solomon his son king over Israel.

וַיֶּאֱסֹ֕ף אֶת כָּל שָׂרֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וְהַכֹּהֲנִ֥ים וְהַלְוִיִּֽם׃

KJVAnd he gathered together all the princes of Israel, with the priests and the Levites.

David assembled all the leaders of Israel and the priests and the Levites.

וַיִּסָּפְר֣וּ הַלְוִיִּ֗ם מִבֶּ֨ן שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים שָׁנָ֛ה וָמַ֖עְלָה וַיְהִ֧י מִסְפָּרָ֛ם לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָ֖ם לִגְבָרִ֑ים שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים וּשְׁמוֹנָ֣ה אָֽלֶף׃

KJVNow the Levites were numbered from the age of thirty years and upward: and their number by their polls, man by man, was thirty and eight thousand.

The Levites, thirty years old and upward, were counted, and the total was 38,000 men.

מֵ֣אֵלֶּה לְנַצֵּ֤חַ עַל מְלֶ֙אכֶת֙ בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה עֶשְׂרִ֥ים וְאַרְבָּעָ֖ה אָ֑לֶף וְשֹׁטְרִ֥ים וְשֹׁפְטִ֖ים שֵׁ֥שֶׁת אֲלָפִֽים׃

KJVOf which, twenty and four thousand were to set forward the work of the house of the LORD; and six thousand were officers and judges:

Twenty-four thousand of these were to have charge of the work in the house of the LORD, 6,000 were officers and judges,

וְאַרְבַּ֥עַת אֲלָפִ֖ים שֹׁעֲרִ֑ים וְאַרְבַּ֙עַת֙ אֲלָפִ֔ים מְהַֽלְלִים֙ לַ֣יהוָ֔ה בַּכֵּלִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתִי לְהַלֵּֽל׃

KJVMoreover four thousand were porters; and four thousand praised the LORD with the instruments which I made, said David, to praise therewith.

4,000 gatekeepers, and 4,000 to praise the LORD with the instruments that David had made for praise.

וַיֶּחָלְקֵ֥ם דָּוִ֖יד מַחְלְקוֹ֑ת לִבְנֵ֣י לֵוִ֔י לְגֵרְשׁ֥וֹן קְהָ֖ת וּמְרָרִֽי׃

KJVAnd David divided them into courses among the sons of Levi, namely, Gershom, Kohath, and Merari.

And David organized them in divisions corresponding to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

לַגֵּרְשֻׁנִּ֑י לַעְדָ֖ן וְשִׁמְעִֽי׃

KJVOf the Gershonites were, Laadan, and Shimei.

The sons of Gershon: Ladan and Shimei.

8

בְּנֵ֣י לַעְדָ֔ן הָרֹ֧אשׁ יְחִיאֵ֛ל וְזֵ֖תָם וְיוֹאֵ֥ל שְׁלֹשָֽׁה׃

KJVThe sons of Laadan; the chief was Jehiel, and Zetham, and Joel, three.

The sons of Ladan: Jehiel the chief, and Zetham, and Joel, three.

בְּנֵ֣י שִׁמְעִ֗י שְׁלֹמִ֥ית וַחֲזִיאֵ֛ל וְהָרָ֖ן שְׁלֹשָׁ֑ה אֵ֖לֶּה רָאשֵׁ֥י הָאָב֖וֹת לְלַעְדָֽן׃

KJVThe sons of Shimei; Shelomith, and Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the heads of the fathers of Laadan.

The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the heads of the fathers' houses of Ladan.

וּבְנֵ֣י שִׁמְעִ֔י יַ֥חַת זִינָ֖א וְיְע֣וּשׁ וּבְרִיעָ֑ה אֵ֖לֶּה בְנֵ֥י שִׁמְעִ֖י אַרְבָּעָֽה׃

KJVAnd the sons of Shimei were, Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei.

And the sons of Shimei: Jahath, Ziza, Jeush, and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei.

וַיְהִ֤י יַ֙חַת֙ הָרֹ֔אשׁ וְזִיזָ֖ה הַשֵּׁנִ֑י וִיע֤וּשׁ וּבְרִיעָה֙ לֹא הִרְבּ֣וּ בָנִ֔ים וַיִּהְי֥וּ לְבֵ֥ית אָ֖ב לִפְקֻדָּ֥ה אֶחָֽת׃

KJVAnd Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah had not many sons; therefore they were in one reckoning, according to their father's house.

בְּנֵ֣י קְהָ֔ת עַמְרָ֥ם יִצְהָ֖ר חֶבְר֥וֹן וְעֻזִּיאֵֽל אַרְבָּעָֽה׃

KJVThe sons of Kohath; Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four.

The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four.

בְּנֵ֣י עַמְרָ֔ם אַהֲרֹ֖ן וּמֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיִּבָּדֵ֣ל אַהֲרֹ֡ן לְהַקְדִּישׁ֩וֹ קֹ֨דֶשׁ קָֽדָשִׁ֜ים ה֣וּא וּבָנָ֤יו עַד עוֹלָם֙ לְהַקְטִ֣יר לִ֣פְנֵי יְהוָ֔ה לְשָׁרְת֖וֹ וּלְבָרֵ֥ךְ בִּשְׁמ֖וֹ עַד עוֹלָֽם׃

KJVThe sons of Amram; Aaron and Moses: and Aaron was separated, that he should sanctify the most holy things, he and his sons for ever, to burn incense before the LORD, to minister unto him, and to bless in his name for ever.

The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Aaron was set apart to dedicate the most holy things, that he and his sons forever should make offerings before the LORD and minister to him and pronounce blessings in his name forever.

וּמֹשֶׁ֕ה אִ֖ישׁ הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים בָּנָ֛יו יִקָּרְא֖וּ עַ֥ל שֵׁ֥בֶט הַלֵּוִֽי׃

KJVNow concerning Moses the man of God, his sons were named of the tribe of Levi.

And Moses the man of God — his sons were named among the tribe of Levi.

בְּנֵ֣י מֹשֶׁ֔ה גֵּרְשֹׁ֖ם וֶאֱלִיעָֽזֶר׃

KJVThe sons of Moses were, Gershom, and Eliezer.

The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer.

16

בְּנֵ֥י גֵרְשׁ֖וֹם שְׁבֻאֵ֥ל הָרֹֽאשׁ׃

KJVOf the sons of Gershom, Shebuel was the chief.

The sons of Gershom: Shebuel the chief.

17

וַיִּהְי֤וּ בְנֵֽי אֱלִיעָזֶר֙ רְחַבְיָ֣ה הָרֹ֔אשׁ וְלֹ֥א הָיָ֧ה לֶאֱלִיעָ֛זֶר בָּנִ֖ים אֲחֵרִ֑ים וּבְנֵ֤י רְחַבְיָה֙ רָב֥וּ לְמַ֔עְלָה׃

KJVAnd the sons of Eliezer were, Rehabiah the chief. And Eliezer had none other sons; but the sons of Rehabiah were very many.

The sons of Eliezer: Rehabiah the chief. Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very many.

בְּנֵ֣י יִצְהָ֔ר שְׁלֹמִ֖ית הָרֹֽאשׁ׃

KJVOf the sons of Izhar; Shelomith the chief.

The sons of Izhar: Shelomoth the chief.

19

בְּנֵ֣י חֶבְר֔וֹן יְרִיָּ֣הוּ הָרֹ֔אשׁ אֲמַרְיָ֥ה הַשֵּׁנִ֖י יַחֲזִיאֵ֥ל הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֗י וְיַקְמְעָ֥ם הָרְבִיעִֽי׃

KJVOf the sons of Hebron; Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.

The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the chief, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, Jekameam the fourth.

20

בְּנֵ֣י עֻזִּיאֵ֔ל מִיכָ֥ה הָרֹ֖אשׁ וְיִשִּׁיָּ֥ה הַשֵּׁנִֽי׃

KJVOf the sons of Uzziel; Micah the first, and Jesiah the second.

The sons of Uzziel: Micah the chief, and Isshiah the second.

21

בְּנֵ֣י מְרָרִ֔י מַחְלִ֖י וּמוּשִׁ֑י בְּנֵ֣י מַחְלִ֔י אֶלְעָזָ֖ר וְקִֽישׁ׃

KJVThe sons of Merari; Mahli, and Mushi. The sons of Mahli; Eleazar, and Kish.

The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish.

22

וַיָּ֤מָת אֶלְעָזָר֙ וְלֹא הָי֣וּ ל֣וֹ בָנִ֑ים כִּ֥י אִם בָּנ֖וֹת וַיִּשָּׂא֥וּם בְּנֵ֥י קִ֖ישׁ אֲחֵיהֶֽם׃

KJVAnd Eleazar died, and had no sons, but daughters: and their brethren the sons of Kish took them.

Eleazar died having no sons, but only daughters; their kinsmen, the sons of Kish, married them.

23

בְּנֵ֣י מוּשִׁ֔י מַחְלִ֥י וְעֵ֖דֶר וִירֵמ֑וֹת שְׁלֹשָֽׁה׃

KJVThe sons of Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth, three.

The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth, three.

24

אֵ֣לֶּה בְנֵ֣י לֵוִ֗י לְבֵ֣ית אֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֡ם רָאשֵׁ֞י הָאָב֥וֹת לִפְקֻדֵיהֶ֛ם בְּמִסְפַּ֥ר שֵׁמ֖וֹת לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָ֑ם עֹשֵׂה֙ הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה לַעֲבֹדַ֖ת בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה מִבֶּ֥ן עֶשְׂרִ֖ים שָׁנָ֥ה וָמָֽעְלָה׃

KJVThese were the sons of Levi after the house of their fathers; even the chief of the fathers, as they were counted by number of names by their polls, that did the work for the service of the house of the LORD, from the age of twenty years and upward.

These were the sons of Levi by their fathers' houses, the heads of fathers' houses as they were listed according to the number of the names of the individuals from twenty years old and upward who were to do the work for the service of the house of the LORD.

25

כִּ֚י אָמַ֣ר דָּוִ֔יד הֵנִ֧יחַ יְהוָ֛ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְעַמּ֑וֹ וַיִּשְׁכֹּ֥ן בִּירוּשָׁלַ֖͏ִם עַד לְעוֹלָֽם׃

KJVFor David said, The LORD God of Israel hath given rest unto his people, that they may dwell in Jerusalem for ever:

For David said: The LORD, the God of Israel, has given rest to his people, and he dwells in Jerusalem forever.

26

וְגַם לַלְוִיִּ֗ם אֵין לָשֵׂ֤את אֶת הַמִּשְׁכָּן֙ וְאֶת כָּל כֵּלָ֔יו לַעֲבֹדָת֖וֹ׃

KJVAnd also unto the Levites; they shall no more carry the tabernacle, nor any vessels of it for the service thereof.

And so the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the things for its service.

27

כִּ֣י בְדִבְרֵ֣י דָוִ֣יד הָ֠אַחֲרֹנִ֠ים הֵ֛מָּה מִסְפַּ֥ר בְּנֵ֥י לֵוִ֖י מִבֶּ֥ן עֶשְׂרִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה וּמַֽעְלָה׃

KJVFor by the last words of David the Levites were numbered from twenty years old and above:

For by the last words of David the sons of Levi were numbered from twenty years old and upward.

28

כִּ֣י מַעֲמָדָ֗ם לְיַ֤ד בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן֙ לַעֲבֹדַ֣ת בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה עַל הַחֲצֵר֥וֹת וְעַל הַלְּשָׁכ֖וֹת וְעַל טָהֳרַ֣ת כָּל קֹ֑דֶשׁ וּמַעֲשֵׂ֖ה עֲבֹדַ֥ת בֵּ֥ית הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃

KJVBecause their office was to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts, and in the chambers, and in the purifying of all holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God;

For their duty was to assist the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the LORD, having the care of the courts and the chambers, the cleansing of all that is holy, and any work for the service of the house of God.

29

וּלְלֶ֨חֶם הַמַּ֜עֲרֶכֶת וּלְסֹ֤לֶת לְמִנְחַת֙ הַמַּחֲבַ֔ת וְלָרְקִיקִ֖ים וְלַ֣מְּלֻבֶּ֑כֶת וְלַמּ֙וֹדָ֙ד֙ וְלִמִּדּ֥וֹת הָ֖אֹ֥רֶךְ וְהָרֹֽחַב׃

KJVBoth for the shewbread, and for the fine flour for meat offering, and for the unleavened cakes, and for that which is baked in the pan, and for that which is fried, and for all manner of measure and size;

Their duty was also to assist with the showbread, the fine flour for the grain offering, the wafers of unleavened bread, the baked offering, the offering mixed with oil, and all measures of quantity or size.

30

וְלַעֲמֹ֤ד בַּבֹּ֙קֶר֙ בַּבֹּ֔קֶר לְהֹד֥וֹת וּלְהַלֵּ֖ל לַ֑יהוָה וְכֵ֖ן לָעָֽרֶב׃

KJVAnd to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and likewise at even;

They were to stand every morning, thanking and praising the LORD, and likewise at evening,

31

וּלְכָ֣ל הַעֲלוֹת֩ עֹל֨וֹת לַ֤יהוָה בַּשַּׁבָּת֙וֹת בָּחֳדָשִׁ֔ים וְלַמֹּעֲדִ֖ים בְּמִסְפָּ֣ר כְּמִשְׁפָּ֑ט עָלֵ֖יהֶם תָּמִֽיד לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

KJVAnd to offer all burnt sacrifices unto the LORD in the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the set feasts, by number, according to the order commanded unto them, continually before the LORD:

and whenever burnt offerings were offered to the LORD on Sabbaths, new moons, and feast days, according to the number required of them, regularly before the LORD.

32

וְשָׁמְר֞וּ אֶת מִשְׁמֶ֣רֶת אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֗ד וְאֵ֚ת מִשְׁמֶ֣רֶת הַקֹּ֔דֶשׁ וּמִשְׁמֶ֕רֶת בְּנֵ֥י אַהֲרֹ֖ן אֲחֵיהֶ֑ם לַעֲבֹדַ֖ת בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃

KJVAnd that they should keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the holy place, and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brethren, in the service of the house of the LORD.

Thus they were to keep charge of the tent of meeting and charge of the holy place, and to attend the sons of Aaron, their brothers, for the service of the house of the LORD.
