Καὶ ἐγώ, ἀδελφοί, οὐκ ἠδυνήθην ὑμῖν λαλῆσαι ὡς πνευματικοῖς, ἀλλ' ὡς σαρκικοῖς, ὡς νηπίοις ἐν Χριστῷ.

KJVAnd I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.

Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly — mere infants in Christ.

Γάλα ὑμᾶς ἐπότισα, καὶ οὐ βρῶμα· οὔπω γὰρ ἐδύνασθε, ἀλλ' οὔτε ἔτι νῦν δύνασθε·

KJVI have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready.

ἔτι γὰρ σαρκικοί ἐστε· ὅπου γὰρ ἐν ὑμῖν ζῆλος καὶ ἔρις καὶ διχοστασίαι, οὐχὶ σαρκικοί ἐστε, καὶ κατὰ ἄνθρωπον περιπατεῖτε;

KJVFor ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans?

Ὅταν γὰρ λέγῃ τις, Ἐγὼ μέν εἰμι Παύλου, ἕτερος δέ, Ἐγὼ Ἀπολλώ, οὐχὶ σαρκικοί ἐστε;

KJVFor while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

For when one says, I follow Paul, and another, I follow Apollos, are you not mere human beings?

Τίς οὖν ἐστιν Παῦλος, τίς δὲ Ἀπολλώς, ἀλλ' ἢ διάκονοι δι' ὧν ἐπιστεύσατε, καὶ ἑκάστῳ ὡς ὁ Κύριος ἔδωκεν;

KJVWho then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?

What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe — as the Lord has assigned to each his task.

Ἐγὼ ἐφύτευσα, Ἀπολλὼς ἐπότισεν, ἀλλ' ὁ Θεὸς ηὔξανεν.

KJVI have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.

Ὥστε οὔτε ὁ φυτεύων ἐστίν τι, οὔτε ὁ ποτίζων, ἀλλ' ὁ αὐξάνων Θεός.

KJVSo then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.

So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.

Ὁ φυτεύων δὲ καὶ ὁ ποτίζων ἕν εἰσιν· ἕκαστος δὲ τὸν ἴδιον μισθὸν λήψεται κατὰ τὸν ἴδιον κόπον.

KJVNow he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.

The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor.

Θεοῦ γάρ ἐσμεν συνεργοί· Θεοῦ γεώργιον, Θεοῦ οἰκοδομή ἐστε.

KJVFor we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.

For we are co-workers in God's service; you are God's field, God's building.

Κατὰ τὴν χάριν τοῦ Θεοῦ τὴν δοθεῖσάν μοι, ὡς σοφὸς ἀρχιτέκτων θεμέλιον τέθεικα, ἄλλος δὲ ἐποικοδομεῖ. Ἕκαστος δὲ βλεπέτω πῶς ἐποικοδομεῖ.

KJVAccording to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.

By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care.

θεμέλιον γὰρ ἄλλον οὐδεὶς δύναται θεῖναι παρὰ τὸν κείμενον, ὅς ἐστιν Ἰησοῦς Χριστός.

KJVFor other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Εἰ δέ τις ἐποικοδομεῖ ἐπὶ τὸν θεμέλιον τοῦτον χρυσόν, ἄργυρον, λίθους τιμίους, ξύλα, χόρτον, καλάμην,

KJVNow if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;

If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw,

ἑκάστου τὸ ἔργον φανερὸν γενήσεται· ἡ γὰρ ἡμέρα δηλώσει, ὅτι ἐν πυρὶ ἀποκαλύπτεται· καὶ ἑκάστου τὸ ἔργον ὁποῖόν ἐστιν τὸ πῦρ δοκιμάσει.

KJVEvery man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.

their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person's work.

Εἴ τινος τὸ ἔργον μένει ὃ ἐποικοδόμησεν, μισθὸν λήψεται.

KJVIf any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.

If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.

15

Εἴ τινος τὸ ἔργον κατακαήσεται, ζημιωθήσεται· αὐτὸς δὲ σωθήσεται, οὕτως δὲ ὡς διὰ πυρός.

KJVIf any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved — even though only as one escaping through the flames.

οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι ναὸς Θεοῦ ἐστε, καὶ τὸ Πνεῦμα τοῦ Θεοῦ οἰκεῖ ἐν ὑμῖν;

KJVKnow ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in your midst?

Εἴ τις τὸν ναὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ φθείρει, φθερεῖ τοῦτον ὁ Θεός· ὁ γὰρ ναὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ ἅγιός ἐστιν, οἵτινές ἐστε ὑμεῖς.

KJVIf any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy that person; for God's temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.

Μηδεὶς ἑαυτὸν ἐξαπατάτω· εἴ τις δοκεῖ σοφὸς εἶναι ἐν ὑμῖν ἐν τῷ αἰῶνι τούτῳ, μωρὸς γενέσθω, ἵνα γένηται σοφός.

KJVLet no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.

Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become fools so that you may become wise.

Ἡ γὰρ σοφία τοῦ κόσμου τούτου μωρία παρὰ τῷ Θεῷ ἐστιν. Γέγραπται γάρ, Ὁ δρασσόμενος τοὺς σοφοὺς ἐν τῇ πανουργίᾳ αὐτῶν.

KJVFor the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it is written: He catches the wise in their craftiness;

Καὶ πάλιν, Κύριος γινώσκει τοὺς διαλογισμοὺς τῶν σοφῶν, ὅτι εἰσὶν μάταιοι.

KJVAnd again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.

and again, The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.

Ὥστε μηδεὶς καυχάσθω ἐν ἀνθρώποις· πάντα γὰρ ὑμῶν ἐστιν,

KJVTherefore let no man glory in men. For all things are your's;

So then, no more boasting about human leaders! All things are yours,

22

εἴτε Παῦλος, εἴτε Ἀπολλώς, εἴτε Κηφᾶς, εἴτε κόσμος, εἴτε ζωή, εἴτε θάνατος, εἴτε ἐνεστῶτα, εἴτε μέλλοντα· πάντα ὑμῶν ἐστιν,

KJVWhether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are your's;

whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future — all are yours,

ὑμεῖς δὲ Χριστοῦ, Χριστὸς δὲ Θεοῦ.

KJVAnd ye are Christ's; and Christ is God's.

and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God.
