וַיְהִ֣י אַחֲרֵ֣י כֵ֗ן וַיָּ֙מָת֙ נָחָ֣שׁ מֶ֣לֶךְ בְּנֵ֣י עַמּ֔וֹן וַיִּמְלֹ֥ךְ בְּנ֖וֹ תַּחְתָּֽיו׃

KJVNow it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.

After this Nahash the king of the Ammonites died, and his son reigned in his place.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר דָּוִ֗יד אֶעֱשֶׂה חֶ֤סֶד עִם חָנוּן֙ בֶּן נָחָ֔שׁ כִּ֥י עָשָׂ֛ה אָבִ֖יו עִמִּ֣י חָ֑סֶד וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח דָּוִיד֙ מַלְאָכִ֔ים לְנַחֲמ֣וֹ עַ֣ל אָבִ֔יו וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ עַבְדֵ֣י דָוִ֔יד אֶ֥ל אֶ֖רֶץ בְּנֵ֥י עַמּֽוֹן לְנַחֲמ֖וֹ׃

KJVAnd David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

And David said: I will deal kindly with Hanun the son of Nahash, for his father dealt kindly with me. So David sent messengers to console him concerning his father. And David's servants came to the land of the Ammonites to Hanun to console him.

וַיֹּאמְר֡וּ שָׂרֵ֣י בְנֵי עַמּוֹן֩ לַחָנ֨וּן מְכַבֵּ֤ד דָּוִיד֙ אֶת אָבִ֔יךָ בְּעֵינֶ֖יךָ כִּ֣י שָׁלַ֣ח לְךָ֣ מְנַחֲמִ֑ים הֲ֠לֹא בַעֲב֞וּר לַחְקֹ֤ר וְלַהֲפֹ֙ךְ֙ וּ֣לְרַגֵּ֔ל אֶת הָאָ֕רֶץ בָּ֥אוּ עֲבָדָ֖יו אֵלֶֽיךָ׃

KJVBut the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?

But the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun: Do you think, because David has sent comforters to you, that David is honoring your father? Have not his servants come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?

וַיִּקַּ֤ח חָנוּן֙ אֶת עַבְדֵ֣י דָוִ֔יד וַיְגַלְּחֵ֗ם וַיִּכְרֹ֤ת אֶת מַדֵּיהֶם֙ בַּחֲצִ֔י עַ֖ד הַשָּׁת֑וֹת וַיְשַׁלְּחֵ֖ם׃

KJVWherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.

So Hanun took David's servants and shaved them and cut off their garments in the middle, at their hips, and sent them away.

וַיֵּלְכ֗וּ וַיַּגִּ֤ידוּ לְדָוִיד֙ עַ֣ל הָ֣אֲנָשִׁ֔ים וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח לִקְרָאתָ֖ם כִּ֣י הָ֣יוּ הָ֣אֲנָשִׁ֣ים נִכְלָמִ֣ים מְאֹ֑ד וַיֹּ֤אמֶר הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ שְׁב֣וּ בִ֔ירֵיחוֹ עַ֥ד יְצַמַּ֖ח זְקַנְכֶ֑ם וְשַׁבְתֶּֽם׃

KJVThen there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

Then David was told concerning the men, and he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said: Remain at Jericho until your beards have grown and then return.

וַיִּרְא֤וּ בְנֵי עַמּוֹן֙ כִּ֣י הִתְבָּאֲשׁ֣וּ עִם דָּוִ֔יד וַיִּשְׁלַ֧ח חָנ֛וּן וּבְנֵ֥י עַמּ֖וֹן אֶ֣לֶף כִּכַּ֣ר כֶּ֑סֶף לִשְׂכֹּ֨ר לָהֶ֧ם מִ֣מֶּסוֹפָּ֣תָמְיָ֡ה וּמֵאֲרַ֞ם מַעֲכָ֗ה וּמִצּוֹבָ֛ה רֶ֥כֶב וּפָרָשִֽׁים׃

KJVAnd when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syriamaachah, and out of Zobah.

When the Ammonites saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent 1,000 talents of silver to hire chariots and horsemen from Mesopotamia, from Aram-maacah, and from Zobah.

וַיִּשְׂכְּרוּ לָהֶ֗ם שְׁנַ֤יִם וּשְׁלֹשִׁים֙ אֶ֣לֶף רֶ֔כֶב וְאֶת מֶ֥לֶךְ מַעֲכָ֖ה וְאֶת עַמּ֑וֹ וַיָּבֹ֗אוּ וַיַּחֲנ֤וּ לִפְנֵ֙י מֵֽידְבָא֙ וּבְנֵ֣י עַמּ֔וֹן נֶ֣אֶסְפ֔וּ מֵעָרֵיהֶ֖ם וַיָּב֥אוּ לַמִּלְחָמָֽה׃

KJVSo they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

So they hired 32,000 chariots and the king of Maacah with his army, who came and encamped before Medeba. And the Ammonites were mustered from their cities and came to battle.

וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע דָּוִ֑יד וַיִּשְׁלַ֛ח אֶת יוֹאָ֖ב וְאֵ֥ת כָּל הַצָּבָ֖א הַגִּבּוֹרִֽים׃

KJVAnd when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

When David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men.

וַיֵּצְאוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י עַמּ֔וֹן וַיַּעַרְכ֤וּ מִלְחָמָה֙ פֶּ֣תַח הָעִ֔יר וְהַמְּלָכִ֛ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר בָּ֖אוּ הָי֥וּ בִּלְבַד֖וֹ בַּשָּׂדֶֽה׃

KJVAnd the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.

And the Ammonites came out and drew up in battle array at the entrance of the city, and the kings who had come were by themselves in the open country.

וַיַּ֤רְא יוֹאָב֙ כִּ֣י הָיְתָ֣ה פְּנֵ֣י הַמִּלְחָמָ֗ה אֵלָ֤יו מִפָּנִים֙ וּמֵאָח֔וֹר וַיִּבְחַ֕ר מִכֹּ֖ל בָּח֣וּר בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיַּעֲרֹ֖ךְ לִקְרַ֥את אֲרָֽם׃

KJVNow when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

When Joab saw that the battle was set against him both in front and in the rear, he chose some of the best men of Israel and arrayed them against the Syrians.

וְאֵ֧ת יֶ֣תֶר הָעָ֗ם נָתַ֛ן בְּיַ֥ד אַבְשַׁ֖י אָחִ֑יו וַיַּעַרְכ֖וּ לִקְרַ֥את בְּנֵ֥י עַמּֽוֹן׃

KJVAnd the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.

The rest of his men he put in the charge of Abishai his brother, and they were arrayed against the Ammonites.

וַיֹּ֡אמֶר אִם תֶּחֱזַ֤ק מִמֶּ֙נִּי֙ אֲרָ֔ם וְהָיִ֥יתָ לִ֖י לִֽישׁוּעָ֑ה וְאִ֨ם בְּנֵ֤י עַמּוֹן֙ יֶחֶזְק֣וּ מִמְּךָ֔ וְהוֹשַׁעְתִּ֖יךָ׃

KJVAnd he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.

And he said: If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me, but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will help you.

חֲזַ֣ק וְנִתְחַזְּקָ֣ה בְּעַ֣ד עַמֵּ֣נוּ וּבְעַ֣ד עָרֵ֣י אֱלֹהֵ֣ינוּ וַ֣יהוָה יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה הַטּ֣וֹב בְּעֵינָֽיו׃

KJVBe of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.

Be strong, and let us act with strength for our people and for the cities of our God, and may the LORD do what seems good to him.

וַיִּגַּ֤שׁ יוֹאָב֙ וְהָעָ֣ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר עִמּ֔וֹ לִפְנֵ֥י אֲרָ֖ם לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה וַיָּנ֖וּסוּ מִפָּנָֽיו׃

KJVSo Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.

So Joab and the people who were with him drew near before the Syrians for battle, and they fled before him.

וּבְנֵ֣י עַמּ֗וֹן רָא֤וּ כִּֽי נָ֙סוּ֙ אֲרָ֔ם וַיָּנ֥וּסוּ גַם הֵ֖ם מִפְּנֵ֣י אַבְשַׁ֑י אָחִ֔יו וַיָּב֖אוּ הָעִֽירָה וַיָּבֹ֣א יוֹאָ֔ב יְרוּשָׁלַ֖͏ִם׃

KJVAnd when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

And when the Ammonites saw that the Syrians fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

וַיַּ֣רְא אֲרָ֔ם כִּ֥י נִגְּפ֖וּ לִפְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיִּשְׁלְח֧וּ מַלְאָכִ֛ים וַיּוֹצִ֜יאוּ אֶת אֲרָ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֤ר מֵעֵ֣בֶר הַ֣נָּהָ֑ר וְשׁ֥וֹפַךְ שַׂ֣ר צְבָ֣א הֲדַדְעֶ֗זֶר לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃

KJVAnd when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

But when the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the Euphrates, with Shophach the commander of the army of Hadadezer at their head.

וַיֻּגַּ֣ד לְדָוִ֔יד וַיֶּאֱסֹ֤ף אֶת כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַיַּעֲבֹ֣ר אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן וַיָּבֹ֣א אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם וַיַּעֲרֹ֥ךְ אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם וַיַּעֲרֹ֤ךְ דָּוִיד֙ לִקְרַ֣את אֲרָ֔ם מִלְחָמָ֑ה וַיִּֽלָּחֲמ֖וּ עִמּֽוֹ׃

KJVAnd it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.

And when it was told to David, he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan and came to them and drew up his forces against them. And when David set the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.

וַיָּ֣נָס אֲרָ֗ם מִלִּפְנֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיַּהֲרֹ֨ג דָּוִ֜יד מֵאֲרָ֗ם שִׁבְעַ֤ת אֲלָפִים֙ רֶ֔כֶב וְאַרְבָּעִ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף אִ֣ישׁ רַגְלִ֑י וְאֵ֛ת שׁוֹפַ֥ךְ שַׂ֖ר הַצָּבָ֥א הֵמִֽית׃

KJVBut the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.

And the Syrians fled before Israel, and David killed of the Syrians the men of 7,000 chariots and 40,000 foot soldiers, and put to death also Shophach the commander of their army.

וַיִּרְא֣וּ עַבְדֵ֣י הֲדַדְעֶ֣זֶר כִּ֣י נִגְּפ֣וּ לִפְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וַיַּשְׁלִ֤ימוּ עִם דָּוִיד֙ וַיַּעַבְד֑וּהוּ וְלֹ֥א אָבָ֛ה אֲרָ֥ם לְהוֹשִׁ֖יעַ אֶת בְּנֵ֥י עַמּ֖וֹן עֽוֹד׃

KJVAnd when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.

And when the servants of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became subject to him. So the Syrians were not willing to save the Ammonites anymore.
