Περὶ δὲ τῶν πνευματικῶν, ἀδελφοί, οὐ θέλω ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν.

KJVNow concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.

Οἴδατε ὅτι ὅτε ἔθνη ἦτε πρὸς τὰ εἴδωλα τὰ ἄφωνα, ὡς ἂν ἤγεσθε, ἀπαγόμενοι.

KJVYe know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.

You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.

Διὸ γνωρίζω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐδεὶς ἐν Πνεύματι Θεοῦ λαλῶν λέγει Ἀνάθεμα Ἰησοῦν· καὶ οὐδεὶς δύναται εἰπεῖν, Κύριον Ἰησοῦν, εἰ μὴ ἐν Πνεύματι ἁγίῳ.

KJVWherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, Jesus be cursed, and no one can say, Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.

διαιρέσεις δὲ χαρισμάτων εἰσί, τὸ δὲ αὐτὸ Πνεῦμα.

KJVNow there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.

Καὶ διαιρέσεις διακονιῶν εἰσίν, καὶ ὁ αὐτὸς Κύριος.

KJVAnd there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.

Καὶ διαιρέσεις ἐνεργημάτων εἰσίν, ὁ δὲ αὐτός ἐστιν Θεός, ὁ ἐνεργῶν τὰ πάντα ἐν πᾶσιν.

KJVAnd there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

Ἑκάστῳ δὲ δίδοται ἡ φανέρωσις τοῦ Πνεύματος πρὸς τὸ συμφέρον.

KJVBut the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

ᾯ μὲν γὰρ διὰ τοῦ Πνεύματος δίδοται λόγος σοφίας, ἄλλῳ δὲ λόγος γνώσεως, κατὰ τὸ αὐτὸ Πνεῦμα·

KJVFor to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,

ἑτέρῳ δὲ πίστις, ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ Πνεύματι· ἄλλῳ δὲ χαρίσματα ἰαμάτων ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ Πνεύματι·

KJVTo another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,

ἄλλῳ δὲ ἐνεργήματα δυνάμεων, ἄλλῳ δὲ προφητεία, ἄλλῳ δὲ διακρίσεις πνευμάτων, ἑτέρῳ δὲ γένη γλωσσῶν, ἄλλῳ δὲ ἑρμηνεία γλωσσῶν·

KJVTo another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.

πάντα δὲ ταῦτα ἐνεργεῖ τὸ ἓν καὶ τὸ αὐτὸ Πνεῦμα, διαιροῦν ἰδίᾳ ἑκάστῳ καθὼς βούλεται.

KJVBut all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

Καθάπερ γὰρ τὸ σῶμα ἕν ἐστιν, καὶ μέλη ἔχει πολλά, πάντα δὲ τὰ μέλη τοῦ σώματος τοῦ ἑνός, πολλὰ ὄντα, ἕν ἐστιν σῶμα· οὕτως καὶ ὁ Χριστός.

KJVFor as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.

καὶ γὰρ ἐν ἑνὶ Πνεύματι ἡμεῖς πάντες εἰς ἓν σῶμα ἐβαπτίσθημεν, εἴτε Ἰουδαῖοι εἴτε Ἕλληνες, εἴτε δοῦλοι εἴτε ἐλεύθεροι· καὶ πάντες εἰς ἓν Πνεῦμα ἐποτίσθημεν.

KJVFor by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body — whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free — and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

Καὶ γὰρ τὸ σῶμα οὐκ ἔστιν ἓν μέλος ἀλλὰ πολλά.

KJVFor the body is not one member, but many.

Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.

Ἐὰν εἴπῃ ὁ πούς, Ὅτι οὐκ εἰμὶ χείρ, οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐκ τοῦ σώματος· οὐ παρὰ τοῦτο οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τοῦ σώματος;

KJVIf the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

Now if the foot should say, Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body, it would not for that reason stop being part of the body.

Καὶ ἐὰν εἴπῃ τὸ οὖς, Ὅτι οὐκ εἰμὶ ὀφθαλμός, οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐκ τοῦ σώματος· οὐ παρὰ τοῦτο οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τοῦ σώματος;

KJVAnd if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

And if the ear should say, Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body, it would not for that reason stop being part of the body.

Εἰ ὅλον τὸ σῶμα ὀφθαλμός, ποῦ ἡ ἀκοή; Εἰ ὅλον ἀκοή, ποῦ ἡ ὄσφρησις;

KJVIf the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?

If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?

Νυνὶ δὲ ὁ Θεὸς ἔθετο τὰ μέλη ἓν ἕκαστον αὐτῶν ἐν τῷ σώματι, καθὼς ἠθέλησεν.

KJVBut now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.

But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.

Εἰ δὲ ἦν τὰ πάντα ἓν μέλος, ποῦ τὸ σῶμα;

KJVAnd if they were all one member, where were the body?

If they were all one part, where would the body be?

20

Νῦν δὲ πολλὰ μὲν μέλη, ἓν δὲ σῶμα.

KJVBut now are they many members, yet but one body.

As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

21

Οὐ δύναται δὲ ὁ ὀφθαλμὸς εἰπεῖν τῇ χειρί, Χρείαν σου οὐκ ἔχω· ἢ πάλιν ἡ κεφαλὴ τοῖς ποσίν, Χρείαν ὑμῶν οὐκ ἔχω.

KJVAnd the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.

The eye cannot say to the hand, I don't need you! And the head cannot say to the feet, I don't need you!

Ἀλλὰ πολλῷ μᾶλλον τὰ δοκοῦντα μέλη τοῦ σώματος ἀσθενέστερα ὑπάρχειν, ἀναγκαῖά ἐστιν·

KJVNay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:

On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable,

καὶ ἃ δοκοῦμεν ἀτιμότερα εἶναι τοῦ σώματος, τούτοις τιμὴν περισσοτέραν περιτίθεμεν· καὶ τὰ ἀσχήμονα ἡμῶν εὐσχημοσύνην περισσοτέραν ἔχει·

KJVAnd those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.

and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty,

τὰ δὲ εὐσχήμονα ἡμῶν οὐ χρείαν ἔχει· ἀλλ' ὁ Θεὸς συνεκέρασεν τὸ σῶμα, τῷ ὑστεροῦντι περισσοτέραν δοὺς τιμήν,

KJVFor our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked:

while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it,

ἵνα μὴ ᾖ σχίσματα ἐν τῷ σώματι, ἀλλὰ τὸ αὐτὸ ὑπὲρ ἀλλήλων μεριμνῶσιν τὰ μέλη.

KJVThat there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.

so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.

Καὶ εἴτε πάσχει ἓν μέλος, συμπάσχει πάντα τὰ μέλη· εἴτε δοξάζεται ἓν μέλος, συγχαίρει πάντα τὰ μέλη.

KJVAnd whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.

If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.

ὑμεῖς δέ ἐστε σῶμα Χριστοῦ καὶ μέλη ἐκ μέρους.

KJVNow ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

28

Καὶ οὓς μὲν ἔθετο ὁ Θεὸς ἐν τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ πρῶτον ἀποστόλους, δεύτερον προφήτας, τρίτον διδασκάλους, ἔπειτα δυνάμεις, εἶτα χαρίσματα ἰαμάτων, ἀντιλήψεις, κυβερνήσεις, γένη γλωσσῶν.

KJVAnd God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues.

Μὴ πάντες ἀπόστολοι; Μὴ πάντες προφῆται; Μὴ πάντες διδάσκαλοι; Μὴ πάντες δυνάμεις;

KJVAre all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?

Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?

Μὴ πάντες χαρίσματα ἔχουσιν ἰαμάτων; Μὴ πάντες γλώσσαις λαλοῦσιν; Μὴ πάντες διερμηνεύουσιν;

KJVHave all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?

Ζηλοῦτε δὲ τὰ χαρίσματα τὰ κρείττονα. Καὶ ἔτι καθ' ὑπερβολὴν ὁδὸν ὑμῖν δείκνυμι.

KJVBut covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent way.
