εν οις επισυναχθεισων των μυριαδων του οχλου ωστε καταπατειν αλληλους ηρξατο λεγειν προς τους μαθητας αυτου πρωτον προσεχετε εαυτοις απο της ζυμης των φαρισαιων ητις εστιν υποκρισις

KJVIn the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

Meanwhile, when a multitude of many thousands had gathered together, so much so that they trampled on each other, he began to tell his disciples first of all, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

ουδεν δε συγκεκαλυμμενον εστιν ο ουκ αποκαλυφθησεται και κρυπτον ο ου γνωσθησεται

KJVFor there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.

But there is nothing covered up, that will not be revealed, nor hidden, that will not be known.

ανθ ων οσα εν τη σκοτια ειπατε εν τω φωτι ακουσθησεται και ο προς το ους ελαλησατε εν τοις ταμειοις κηρυχθησεται επι των δωματων

KJVTherefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.

Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light. What you have spoken in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.

λεγω δε υμιν τοις φιλοις μου μη φοβηθητε απο των αποκτεινοντων το σωμα και μετα ταυτα μη εχοντων περισσοτερον τι ποιησαι

KJVAnd I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

“I tell you, my friends, don’t be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

υποδειξω δε υμιν τινα φοβηθητε φοβηθητε τον μετα το αποκτειναι εξουσιαν εχοντα εμβαλειν εις την γεενναν ναι λεγω υμιν τουτον φοβηθητε

KJVBut I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

But I will warn you whom you should fear. Fear him, who after he has killed, has power to cast into Gehenna. Yes, I tell you, fear him.

ουχι πεντε στρουθια πωλειται ασσαριων δυο και εν εξ αυτων ουκ εστιν επιλελησμενον ενωπιον του θεου

KJVAre not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?

“Aren’t five sparrows sold for two assaria coins? Not one of them is forgotten by God.

αλλα και αι τριχες της κεφαλης υμων πασαι ηριθμηνται μη ουν φοβεισθε πολλων στρουθιων διαφερετε

KJVBut even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

But the very hairs of your head are all counted. Therefore don’t be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows.

λεγω δε υμιν πας ος αν ομολογηση εν εμοι εμπροσθεν των ανθρωπων και ο υιος του ανθρωπου ομολογησει εν αυτω εμπροσθεν των αγγελων του θεου

KJVAlso I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:

“I tell you, everyone who confesses me before men, him will the Son of Man also confess before the angels of God;

ο δε αρνησαμενος με ενωπιον των ανθρωπων απαρνηθησεται ενωπιον των αγγελων του θεου

KJVBut he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.

but he who denies me in the presence of men will be denied in the presence of the angels of God.

και πας ος ερει λογον εις τον υιον του ανθρωπου αφεθησεται αυτω τω δε εις το αγιον πνευμα βλασφημησαντι ουκ αφεθησεται

KJVAnd whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.

Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but those who blaspheme against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

οταν δε προσφερωσιν υμας επι τας συναγωγας και τας αρχας και τας εξουσιας μη μεριμνατε πως η τι απολογησησθε η τι ειπητε

KJVAnd when they bring you unto the synagogues, and {unto} magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:

When they bring you before the synagogues, the rulers, and the authorities, don’t be anxious how or what you will answer, or what you will say;

το γαρ αγιον πνευμα διδαξει υμας εν αυτη τη ωρα α δει ειπειν

KJVFor the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.

for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that same hour what you must say.”

ειπεν δε τις αυτω εκ του οχλου διδασκαλε ειπε τω αδελφω μου μερισασθαι μετ εμου την κληρονομιαν

KJVAnd one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.

One of the multitude said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

ο δε ειπεν αυτω ανθρωπε τις με κατεστησεν δικαστην η μεριστην εφ υμας

KJVAnd he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?

But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or an arbitrator over you?”

15

ειπεν δε προς αυτους ορατε και φυλασσεσθε απο της πλεονεξιας οτι ουκ εν τω περισσευειν τινι η ζωη αυτου εστιν εκ των υπαρχοντων αυτου

KJVAnd he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

He said to them, “Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man’s life doesn’t consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses.”

ειπεν δε παραβολην προς αυτους λεγων ανθρωπου τινος πλουσιου ευφορησεν η χωρα

KJVAnd he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

He spoke a parable to them, saying, “The ground of a certain rich man produced abundantly.

και διελογιζετο εν εαυτω λεγων τι ποιησω οτι ουκ εχω που συναξω τους καρπους μου

KJVAnd he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

He reasoned within himself, saying, ‘What will I do, because I don’t have room to store my crops?’

και ειπεν τουτο ποιησω καθελω μου τας αποθηκας και μειζονας οικοδομησω και συναξω εκει παντα τα γενηματα μου και τα αγαθα μου

KJVAnd he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

He said, ‘This is what I will do. I will pull down my barns, and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.

και ερω τη ψυχη μου ψυχη εχεις πολλα αγαθα κειμενα εις ετη πολλα αναπαυου φαγε πιε ευφραινου

KJVAnd I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, {and} be merry.

I will tell my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.”’

ειπεν δε αυτω ο θεος αφρων αφρον ταυτη τη νυκτι την ψυχην σου απαιτουσιν απο σου α δε ητοιμασας τινι εσται

KJVBut God said unto him, {Thou} fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? {thy...: Gr. do they require thy soul}

“But God said to him, ‘You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared—whose will they be?’

ουτως ο θησαυριζων εαυτω και μη εις θεον πλουτων

KJVSo {is} he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

22

ειπεν δε προς τους μαθητας αυτου δια τουτο υμιν λεγω μη μεριμνατε τη ψυχη υμων τι φαγητε μηδε τω σωματι τι ενδυσησθε

KJVAnd he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.

He said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, don’t be anxious for your life, what you will eat, nor yet for your body, what you will wear.

η ψυχη πλειον εστιν της τροφης και το σωμα του ενδυματος

KJVThe life is more than meat, and the body {is more} than raiment.

Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing.

24

κατανοησατε τους κορακας οτι ου σπειρουσιν ουδε θεριζουσιν οις ουκ εστιν ταμειον ουδε αποθηκη και ο θεος τρεφει αυτους ποσω μαλλον υμεις διαφερετε των πετεινων

KJVConsider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?

Consider the ravens: they don’t sow, they don’t reap, they have no warehouse or barn, and God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than birds!

τις δε εξ υμων μεριμνων δυναται προσθειναι επι την ηλικιαν αυτου πηχυν ενα

KJVAnd which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?

Which of you by being anxious can add a cubit to his height?

26

ει ουν ουτε ελαχιστον δυνασθε τι περι των λοιπων μεριμνατε

KJVIf ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest?

If then you aren’t able to do even the least things, why are you anxious about the rest?

27

κατανοησατε τα κρινα πως αυξανει ου κοπια ουδε νηθει λεγω δε υμιν ουδε σολομων εν παση τη δοξη αυτου περιεβαλετο ως εν τουτων

KJVConsider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

Consider the lilies, how they grow. They don’t toil, neither do they spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

ει δε τον χορτον εν τω αγρω σημερον οντα και αυριον εις κλιβανον βαλλομενον ο θεος ουτως αμφιεννυσιν ποσω μαλλον υμας ολιγοπιστοι

KJVIf then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more {will he clothe} you, O ye of little faith?

But if this is how God clothes the grass in the field, which today exists, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith?

29

και υμεις μη ζητειτε τι φαγητε η τι πιητε και μη μετεωριζεσθε

KJVAnd seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. {neither...: or, live not in careful suspense}

Don’t seek what you will eat or what you will drink; neither be anxious.

30

ταυτα γαρ παντα τα εθνη του κοσμου επιζητει υμων δε ο πατηρ οιδεν οτι χρηζετε τουτων

KJVFor all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.

For the nations of the world seek after all of these things, but your Father knows that you need these things.

31

πλην ζητειτε την βασιλειαν του θεου και ταυτα παντα προστεθησεται υμιν

KJVBut rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.

But seek God’s Kingdom, and all these things will be added to you.

32

μη φοβου το μικρον ποιμνιον οτι ευδοκησεν ο πατηρ υμων δουναι υμιν την βασιλειαν

KJVFear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

Don’t be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom.

33

πωλησατε τα υπαρχοντα υμων και δοτε ελεημοσυνην ποιησατε εαυτοις βαλαντια μη παλαιουμενα θησαυρον ανεκλειπτον εν τοις ουρανοις οπου κλεπτης ουκ εγγιζει ουδε σης διαφθειρει

KJVSell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.

Sell that which you have, and give gifts to the needy. Make for yourselves purses which don’t grow old, a treasure in the heavens that doesn’t fail, where no thief approaches, neither moth destroys.

οπου γαρ εστιν ο θησαυρος υμων εκει και η καρδια υμων εσται

KJVFor where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

35

εστωσαν υμων αι οσφυες περιεζωσμεναι και οι λυχνοι καιομενοι

KJVLet your loins be girded about, and {your} lights burning;

“Let your waist be dressed and your lamps burning.

36

και υμεις ομοιοι ανθρωποις προσδεχομενοις τον κυριον εαυτων ποτε αναλυσει εκ των γαμων ινα ελθοντος και κρουσαντος ευθεως ανοιξωσιν αυτω

KJVAnd ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.

Be like men watching for their lord, when he returns from the marriage feast; that, when he comes and knocks, they may immediately open to him.

37

μακαριοι οι δουλοι εκεινοι ους ελθων ο κυριος ευρησει γρηγορουντας αμην λεγω υμιν οτι περιζωσεται και ανακλινει αυτους και παρελθων διακονησει αυτοις

KJVBlessed {are} those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.

Blessed are those servants, whom the lord will find watching when he comes. Most certainly I tell you, that he will dress himself, and make them recline, and will come and serve them.

38

και εαν ελθη εν τη δευτερα φυλακη και εν τη τριτη φυλακη ελθη και ευρη ουτως μακαριοι εισιν οι δουλοι εκεινοι

KJVAnd if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find {them} so, blessed are those servants.

They will be blessed if he comes in the second or third watch, and finds them so.

39

τουτο δε γινωσκετε οτι ει ηδει ο οικοδεσποτης ποια ωρα ο κλεπτης ερχεται εγρηγορησεν αν και ουκ αν αφηκεν διορυγηναι τον οικον αυτου

KJVAnd this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through.

But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not allowed his house to be broken into.

40

και υμεις ουν γινεσθε ετοιμοι οτι η ωρα ου δοκειτε ο υιος του ανθρωπου ερχεται

KJVBe ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

Therefore be ready also, for the Son of Man is coming in an hour that you don’t expect him.”

41

ειπεν δε αυτω ο πετρος κυριε προς ημας την παραβολην ταυτην λεγεις η και προς παντας

KJVThen Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all?

Peter said to him, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everybody?”

42

ειπεν δε ο κυριος τις αρα εστιν ο πιστος οικονομος και φρονιμος ον καταστησει ο κυριος επι της θεραπειας αυτου του διδοναι εν καιρω το σιτομετριον

KJVAnd the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom {his} lord shall make ruler over his household, to give {them their} portion of meat in due season?

The Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the right times?

43

μακαριος ο δουλος εκεινος ον ελθων ο κυριος αυτου ευρησει ποιουντα ουτως

KJVBlessed {is} that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

Blessed is that servant whom his lord will find doing so when he comes.

44

αληθως λεγω υμιν οτι επι πασιν τοις υπαρχουσιν αυτου καταστησει αυτον

KJVOf a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.

Truly I tell you, that he will set him over all that he has.

45

εαν δε ειπη ο δουλος εκεινος εν τη καρδια αυτου χρονιζει ο κυριος μου ερχεσθαι και αρξηται τυπτειν τους παιδας και τας παιδισκας εσθιειν τε και πινειν και μεθυσκεσθαι

KJVBut and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;

But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My lord delays his coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken,

ηξει ο κυριος του δουλου εκεινου εν ημερα η ου προσδοκα και εν ωρα η ου γινωσκει και διχοτομησει αυτον και το μερος αυτου μετα των απιστων θησει

KJVThe lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for {him}, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. {cut...: or, cut him off}

then the lord of that servant will come in a day when he isn’t expecting him, and in an hour that he doesn’t know, and will cut him in two, and place his portion with the unfaithful.

εκεινος δε ο δουλος ο γνους το θελημα του κυριου εαυτου και μη ετοιμασας μηδε ποιησας προς το θελημα αυτου δαρησεται πολλας

KJVAnd that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not {himself}, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many {stripes}.

That servant, who knew his lord’s will, and didn’t prepare, nor do what he wanted, will be beaten with many stripes,

ο δε μη γνους ποιησας δε αξια πληγων δαρησεται ολιγας παντι δε ω εδοθη πολυ πολυ ζητηθησεται παρ αυτου και ω παρεθεντο πολυ περισσοτερον αιτησουσιν αυτον

KJVBut he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few {stripes}. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

but he who didn’t know, and did things worthy of stripes, will be beaten with few stripes. To whomever much is given, of him will much be required; and to whom much was entrusted, of him more will be asked.

πυρ ηλθον βαλειν εις την γην και τι θελω ει ηδη ανηφθη

KJVI am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?

“I came to throw fire on the earth. I wish it were already kindled.

50

βαπτισμα δε εχω βαπτισθηναι και πως συνεχομαι εως ου τελεσθη

KJVBut I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! {straitened: or, pained}

But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!

δοκειτε οτι ειρηνην παρεγενομην δουναι εν τη γη ουχι λεγω υμιν αλλ η διαμερισμον

KJVSuppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:

Do you think that I have come to give peace in the earth? I tell you, no, but rather division.

εσονται γαρ απο του νυν πεντε εν οικω ενι διαμεμερισμενοι τρεις επι δυσιν και δυο επι τρισιν

KJVFor from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.

For from now on, there will be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.

53

διαμερισθησεται πατηρ εφ υιω και υιος επι πατρι μητηρ επι θυγατρι και θυγατηρ επι μητρι πενθερα επι την νυμφην αυτης και νυμφη επι την πενθεραν αυτης

KJVThe father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

They will be divided, father against son, and son against father; mother against daughter, and daughter against her mother; mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

ελεγεν δε και τοις οχλοις οταν ιδητε την νεφελην ανατελλουσαν απο δυσμων ευθεως λεγετε ομβρος ερχεται και γινεται ουτως

KJVAnd he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is.

He said to the multitudes also, “When you see a cloud rising from the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming,’ and so it happens.

και οταν νοτον πνεοντα λεγετε οτι καυσων εσται και γινεται

KJVAnd when {ye see} the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass.

When a south wind blows, you say, ‘There will be a scorching heat,’ and it happens.

56

υποκριται το προσωπον της γης και του ουρανου του ουρανου και της γης οιδατε δοκιμαζειν τον δε καιρον τουτον πως ου δοκιμαζετε

KJV{Ye} hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?

You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but how is it that you don’t interpret this time?

τι δε και αφ εαυτων ου κρινετε το δικαιον

KJVYea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?

Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right?

58

ως γαρ υπαγεις μετα του αντιδικου σου επ αρχοντα εν τη οδω δος εργασιαν απηλλαχθαι απ αυτου μηποτε κατασυρη σε προς τον κριτην και ο κριτης σε παραδω τω πρακτορι και ο πρακτωρ σε βαλλη εις φυλακην

KJVWhen thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, {as thou art} in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison.

For when you are going with your adversary before the magistrate, try diligently on the way to be released from him, lest perhaps he drag you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.

λεγω σοι ου μη εξελθης εκειθεν εως ου και το εσχατον λεπτον αποδως

KJVI tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.

I tell you, you will by no means get out of there, until you have paid the very last penny.”
