Σὺ δὲ λάλει ἃ πρέπει τῇ ὑγιαινούσῃ διδασκαλίᾳ·

KJVBut speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:

You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine.

πρεσβύτας νηφαλέους εἶναι, σεμνούς, σώφρονας, ὑγιαίνοντας τῇ πίστει, τῇ ἀγάπῃ, τῇ ὑπομονῇ·

KJVThat the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.

Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.

πρεσβύτιδας ὡσαύτως ἐν καταστήματι ἱεροπρεπεῖς, μὴ διαβόλους, μὴ οἴνῳ πολλῷ δεδουλωμένας, καλοδιδασκάλους,

KJVThe aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good.

ἵνα σωφρονίζωσιν τὰς νέας φιλάνδρους εἶναι, φιλοτέκνους,

KJVThat they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children,

σώφρονας, ἁγνάς, οἰκουρούς, ἀγαθάς, ὑποτασσομένας τοῖς ἰδίοις ἀνδράσιν, ἵνα μὴ ὁ λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ βλασφημῆται·

KJVTo be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.

τοὺς νεωτέρους ὡσαύτως παρακάλει σωφρονεῖν·

KJVYoung men likewise exhort to be sober minded.

Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled.

περὶ πάντα σεαυτὸν παρεχόμενος τύπον καλῶν ἔργων, ἐν τῇ διδασκαλίᾳ ἀδιαφθορίαν, σεμνότητα, ἀφθαρσίαν,

KJVIn all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,

In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness

λόγον ὑγιῆ, ἀκατάγνωστον, ἵνα ὁ ἐξ ἐναντίας ἐντραπῇ, μηδὲν ἔχων περὶ ἡμῶν λέγειν φαῦλον.

KJVSound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

Δούλους ἰδίοις δεσπόταις ὑποτάσσεσθαι, ἐν πᾶσιν εὐαρέστους εἶναι, μὴ ἀντιλέγοντας,

KJVExhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again;

Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them,

μὴ νοσφιζομένους, ἀλλὰ πίστιν πᾶσαν ἐνδεικνυμένους ἀγαθήν, ἵνα τὴν διδασκαλίαν τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Θεοῦ κοσμῶσιν ἐν πᾶσιν.

KJVNot purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.

ἐπεφάνη γὰρ ἡ χάρις τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡ σωτήριος πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποις,

KJVFor the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.

παιδεύουσα ἡμᾶς ἵνα, ἀρνησάμενοι τὴν ἀσέβειαν καὶ τὰς κοσμικὰς ἐπιθυμίας, σωφρόνως καὶ δικαίως καὶ εὐσεβῶς ζήσωμεν ἐν τῷ νῦν αἰῶνι,

KJVTeaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

It teaches us to say No to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,

προσδεχόμενοι τὴν μακαρίαν ἐλπίδα καὶ ἐπιφάνειαν τῆς δόξης τοῦ μεγάλου Θεοῦ καὶ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ·

KJVLooking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

while we wait for the blessed hope — the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,

ὃς ἔδωκεν ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν, ἵνα λυτρώσηται ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ πάσης ἀνομίας, καὶ καθαρίσῃ ἑαυτῷ λαὸν περιούσιον, ζηλωτὴν καλῶν ἔργων.

KJVWho gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

Ταῦτα λάλει, καὶ παρακάλει, καὶ ἔλεγχε μετὰ πάσης ἐπιταγῆς. Μηδείς σου περιφρονείτω.

KJVThese things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.
