Exodus Chapter 33 — Moses Seeks God's Presence — The Cleft of the Rock | KJV & Biblical Hebrew

וַיְדַבֵּר יְהוָה אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵךְ עֲלֵה

KJVAnd the LORD said unto Moses, Depart, and go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

The LORD said to Moses, "Depart; go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob."

וְשָׁלַחְתִּי לְפָנֶיךָ מַלְאָךְ

KJVAnd I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

אֶל אֶרֶץ זָבַת חָלָב וּדְבַשׁ

KJVUnto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way.

Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; but I will not go up among you, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.

וַיִּשְׁמַע הָעָם אֶת הַדָּבָר הָרָע

KJVAnd when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.

When the people heard this disastrous word, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments.

5

וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל מֹשֶׁה

KJVFor the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.

For the LORD had said to Moses, "Say to the people of Israel, 'You are a stiff-necked people; if for a single moment I should go up among you, I would consume you.'"

וַיִּתְנַצְּלוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל

KJVAnd the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb.

Therefore the people of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward.

וּמֹשֶׁה יִקַּח אֶת הָאֹהֶל

KJVAnd Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.

Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the LORD would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp.

וְהָיָה כְּצֵאת מֹשֶׁה

KJVAnd it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle.

Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise up, and each would stand at his tent door, and watch Moses until he had gone into the tent.

וְהָיָה כְּבֹא מֹשֶׁה הָאֹהֱלָה

KJVAnd it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the LORD talked with Moses.

When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the LORD would speak with Moses.

וְרָאָה כָל הָעָם אֶת עַמּוּד הֶעָנָן

KJVAnd all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door.

And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, each at his tent door.

וְדִבֶּר יְהוָה אֶל מֹשֶׁה פָּנִים אֶל פָּנִים

KJVAnd the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.

Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.

וַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה אֶל יְהוָה

KJVAnd Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me.

Moses said to the LORD, "See, you say to me, 'Bring up this people,' but you have not let me know whom you will send with me."

וְעַתָּה אִם נָא מָצָאתִי חֵן

KJVNow therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.

Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.

וַיֹּאמַר פָּנַי יֵלֵכוּ

KJVAnd he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.

And he said, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest."

15

וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו

KJVAnd he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.

And he said to him, "If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here."

16

וּבַמֶּה יִוָּדַע אֵפוֹא

KJVFor wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.

For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is it not in your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?

וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל מֹשֶׁה

KJVAnd the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.

And the LORD said to Moses, "This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name."

וַיֹּאמַר הַרְאֵנִי נָא אֶת כְּבֹדֶךָ

KJVAnd he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.

Moses said, "Please show me your glory."

19

וַיֹּאמַר אֲנִי אַעֲבִיר כָּל טוּבִי

KJVAnd he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.

And he said, "I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name 'The LORD.' And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy."

20

וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא תוּכַל לִרְאֹת אֶת פָּנָי

KJVAnd he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.

But he said, "You cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live."

21

וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה הִנֵּה מָקוֹם אִתִּי

KJVAnd the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock.

And the LORD said, "Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock,

22

וְהָיָה בַּעֲבֹר כְּבֹדִי

KJVAnd it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by.

and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by.

23

וַהֲסִרֹתִי אֶת כַּפִּי

KJVAnd I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.

Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.
