וְהִתְנַבִּ֡י חַגַּ֣י נְבִיָּ֡א וּזְכַרְיָ֣ה בַר עִדּ֡וֹא נְבִיַּיָּ֡א עַל יְהוּדָיֵ֡א דִּ֣י בִיהוּד֩ וּבִירוּשְׁלֶ֨ם בְּשֻׁ֜ם אֱלָ֣הּ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל עֲלֵיהֹֽון׃

KJVThen the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, even unto them.

Now the prophets, Haggai and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel who was over them.

בֵּ֙אדַיִן֙ קָ֗מוּ זְרֻבָּבֶ֤ל בַּר שַׁלְתִּיאֵל֙ וְיֵשׁ֣וּעַ בַּר יֹוצָדָ֔ק וְשָׁרִ֕יו לְמִבְנֵ֖א בֵּ֣ית אֱלָהָ֑א דִּ֣י בִירוּשְׁלֶ֗ם וְעִמְּה֛וֹן נְבִיַּיָּ֥א דִֽי אֱלָהָ֖א מְסָעֲדִ֥ין לְהֹֽון׃

KJVThen rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem: and with them were the prophets of God helping them.

Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak arose and began to rebuild the house of God that is in Jerusalem, and the prophets of God were with them, supporting them.

בֵּהּ זְמַנָּ֗א אֲתָ֣א עֲלֵיהֹון֮ תַּתְּנַ֣י פַּחַת֮ עֲבַ֣ר נַהֲרָה֒ וּשְׁתַ֥ר בֹּוזְנַ֖י וּכְנָוָתְה֑וֹן וְכֵן֙ אָמְרִ֣ין לְהֹ֔ון מַן שָׂ֣ם לְכֹ֔ון טְעֵ֕ם בַּיְתָ֥א דְנָ֖ה לְמִבְנֵ֑א וְשׁוּרָ֥ה דְנָ֖ה לְשַׁכְלָלָֽה׃

KJVAt the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shetharboznai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall?

At the same time Tattenai the governor of the province Beyond the River and Shethar-bozenai and their associates came to them and spoke to them thus: Who gave you a decree to build this house and to finish this wall?

אֱדַ֙יִן֙ כְּנֵ֣מָא אֲמַ֔רְנָא לְהֹ֑ום מַן אִנּ֕וּן שְׁמָהָ֥ת גֻּבְרַיָּ֖א דִּ֥י בִנְיָנָ֥א דְנָ֖ה בָּנַֽיִן׃

KJVThen said we unto them after this manner, What are the names of the men that make this building?

We also asked them their names, for your information, that we might write down the names of their leaders.

וְעֵ֣ין אֱלָהֲה֤וֹן הֲוָ֙ת֙ עַל שָׂבֵ֣י יְהוּדָיֵ֔א וְלָ֥א בַטִּ֖ילוּ הִמּ֑וֹ עַד טַ֙עְמָא֙ לְדָרְיָ֣וֶשׁ יְהָ֔ךְ וֶאֱדַ֙יִן֙ יְתִיב֣וּן נִשְׁתְּוָנָ֔א עַל דְּנָ֖ה׃

KJVBut the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter came to Darius: and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter.

But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, and they did not stop them until the report should reach Darius and then an answer be returned by letter concerning it.

פַּרְשֶׁ֣גֶן אִגַּרְתָּ֗א דִּ֣י שְׁלַ֤ח תַּתְּנַי֙ פַּחַ֣ת עֲבַר נַהֲרָ֔ה וּשְׁתַ֥ר בֹּוזְנַ֖י וּכְנָוֹת֑וֹהִי אֲפַרְסְכָיֵ֛א דִּ֥י בַעֲבַ֖ר נַהֲרָ֥ה עַל דָּרְיָ֥וֶשׁ מַלְכָּֽא׃

KJVThe copy of the letter that Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shetharboznai, and his companions the Apharsachites, which were on this side the river, sent unto Darius the king:

This is a copy of the letter that Tattenai the governor of the province Beyond the River and Shethar-bozenai and his associates the governors who were in the province Beyond the River sent to Darius the king.

פִּתְגָמָ֥א שְׁלַ֖חוּ עֲלֹ֑והִי וְכִדְנָ֥ה כְתִ֖יב בְּגַוֵּ֥הּ לְדָרְיָ֥וֶשׁ מַלְכָּ֛א שְׁלָ֥מָא כֹלָּ֖א׃

KJVThey sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus; Unto Darius the king, all peace.

They sent him a report, in which was written as follows: To Darius the king, all peace.

יְדִ֣יעַ לֶהֱוֵ֣א לְמַלְכָּ֡א דִּ֣י אֲזַ֣לְנָא לִ֣יהוּד מְדִינְתָּ֡א לְבֵ֣ית אֱלָהָ֡א רַבָּ֡א וְה֣וּא מִתְבְּנֵ֡א אֶ֣בֶן גְּלָ֡ל וְאָ֣עַ מִתְשָׂ֡ם בְּכֻתְלַיָּ֡א וַעֲבִידְתָּ֡א דָ֡ךְ אָסְפַּרְנָ֡א מִֽתְעַבְדָ֡א וּמַצְלַ֡ח בְּיֶדְהֹֽם׃

KJVBe it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth fast on, and prospereth in their hands.

Be it known to the king that we went to the province of Judah, to the house of the great God. It is being built with huge stones, and timber is laid in the walls. This work goes on diligently and prospers in their hands.

אֱדַ֙יִן֙ שְׁאֵ֣לְנָא לְשָׂבַיָּ֣א אִלֵּ֔ך כְּנֵ֖מָא אֲמַ֣רְנָא לְהֹ֑ום מַ֣ן שָׂ֣ם לְכֹ֣ון טְעֵ֡ם בַּיְתָ֡א דְנָ֡ה לְמִבְנֵ֡א וְשׁוּרָ֡ה דְנָ֡ה לְשַׁכְלָלָֽה׃

KJVThen asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who commanded you to build this house, and to make up these walls?

Then we asked those elders and spoke to them thus: Who gave you a decree to build this house and to finish this wall?

וְאַ֤ף שְׁמָהָֽתְהֹון֙ שְׁאֵ֣לְנָ֔א לְהֹוֹדָ֣עֻתָ֔ךְ דִּ֣י נִכְתֻּ֔ב שֻׁ֥ם גֻּבְרַיָּ֖א דִּ֥י בְרֵאשֵׁיהֹֽון׃

KJVWe asked their names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that were the chief of them.

We also asked them their names, so that we might write down the names of their leaders for your information.

וּכְנֵ֣מָא פִּתְגָמָ֣א הֲתִ֡יבוּ לָ֣נָא לְמֵֽימַ֡ר אֲנַ֣חְנָא הִמּ֡וֹ עַבְדֹ֡והִי דִּ֣י אֱלָ֣הּ שְׁמַיָּ֡א וְאַרְעָ֡א וּבָנַ֣יִן בַּיְתָ֡א דִּ֣י הֲוָ֡א בְּנֵ֡י מִקַּדְמַ֡ת דְּנָ֡ה שְׁנִ֡ין שַׂגִּיאָ֡ן וּמֶ֣לֶךְ לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֡ל רַ֡ב בְּנָ֡הִי וְשַׁכְלְלֵֽהּ׃

KJVAnd thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and build the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and set up.

And this was their reply to us: We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the house that was built many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and finished.

לָהֵ֣ן מִן דִּ֡י הַרְגִּ֣זוּ אֲבָהָתַ֣נָא לֶאֱלָ֣הּ שְׁמַיָּ֡א יְהַ֣ב הִמּ֡וֹ בִּידָ֡א דִּ֣י נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּ֣ר מֶֽלֶךְ בָּבֶ֡ל כַּלְדָּאָ֡ה וּבַיְתָ֡א דְנָ֡ה סַ֡תְרֵהּ וְעַמָּ֡א הַגְלִ֡י לְבָבֶֽל׃

KJVBut after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon.

But because our fathers had angered the God of heaven, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house and carried away the people to Babylonia.

בְּרַ֣ם בִּשְׁנַ֣ת חֲדָ֡ה לְכ֣וֹרֶשׁ מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֡ל כּ֣וֹרֶשׁ מַלְכָּ֡א שָׂ֣ם טְעֵ֡ם בֵּ֣ית אֱלָהָ֡א דְנָ֡ה לְמִבְנֵֽה׃

KJVBut in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon the same king Cyrus made a decree to build this house of God.

However, in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree that this house of God should be rebuilt.

וְאַ֣ף מָֽאנַיָּ֡א דִּ֣י בֵית אֱלָהָ֡א דַּהֲבָ֡ה וְכַסְפָּ֡א דִּ֣י נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּ֣ר הַנְפֵּ֣ק מִן הֵיכְלָ֣א דִּ֣י בִירוּשְׁלֶ֡ם וְהֵיבֵ֡ל הִמּ֡וֹ לְהֵיכְלָ֡א דִּ֣י בָבֶ֡ל הַנְפֵּ֣ק הִמּ֡וֹ כּוֹרֶ֡שׁ מַלְכָּ֡א מִן הֵיכְלָ֡א דִּ֣י בָבֶ֡ל וִיהִ֣יבוּ לְשֵׁשְׁבַּצַּ֡ר שְׁמֵ֡הּ דִּ֣י פֶחָ֡א שָׂמֵֽהּ׃

KJVAnd the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought them into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one, whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor;

And also the gold and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple in Jerusalem and brought into the temple of Babylon, these Cyrus the king took out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor;

וַאֲמַ֣ר לֵ֡הּ אִלֵּ֡ין מָאנַיָּ֡א שֵׂ֡א אֵ֣זֶל אֲחֵ֡ת הִמּ֡וֹ בְּהֵיכְלָ֡א דִּ֣י בִירוּשְׁלֶ֡ם וּבֵ֣ית אֱלָהָ֡א יִתְבְּנֵ֡א עַל אַתְרֵֽהּ׃

KJVAnd said unto him, Take these vessels, go, carry them into the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be builded in his place.

and he said to him: Take these vessels, go and put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be rebuilt on its site.

אֱדַ֙יִן֙ שֵׁשְׁבַּצַּ֣ר דֵּ֔ךְ אֲתָ֣א יְהַ֔ב אֻשַּׁיָּ֕א דִּ֥י בֵית אֱלָהָ֖א דִּ֣י בִירוּשְׁלֶ֑ם וּמִן אֱדַ֙יִן֙ וְעַד כְּעַ֔ן מִתְבְּנֵ֖א וְלָ֥א שְׁלִֽם׃

KJVThen came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not finished.

Then this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of the house of God in Jerusalem, and from that time until now it has been in building, and it is not yet finished.

כְּעַ֡ן הֵן֩ עַל מַלְכָּ֨א טָ֜ב יִתְבַּקַּ֣ר בְּבֵ֣ית גִּנְזַיָּ֣א דִּ֣י מַלְכָּ֡א תַּמָּ֣ה דִּ֣י בְּבָבֶ֡ל הֵ֣ן אִיתַ֡י דִּ֣י מִן כּוֹרֶ֡שׁ מַלְכָּ֡א שִׂ֡ים טְעֵ֡ם לְמִבְנֵ֡א בֵּ֣ית אֱלָהָ֡א דֵּ֡ךְ בִּירוּשְׁלֶ֡ם וּרְעוּת֩ מַלְכָּ֨א עַל דְּנָ֜ה יִשְׁלַ֖ח עֲלֵינָֽא׃

KJVNow therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king's treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.

Therefore, if it seems good to the king, let search be made in the royal archives there in Babylon, to see whether a decree was issued by Cyrus the king for the rebuilding of this house of God in Jerusalem. And let the king send us his pleasure in this matter.
