Παρακαλῶ οὖν πρῶτον πάντων ποιεῖσθαι δεήσεις, προσευχάς, ἐντεύξεις, εὐχαριστίας, ὑπὲρ πάντων ἀνθρώπων·

KJVI exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people —

ὑπὲρ βασιλέων καὶ πάντων τῶν ἐν ὑπεροχῇ ὄντων, ἵνα ἤρεμον καὶ ἡσύχιον βίον διάγωμεν ἐν πάσῃ εὐσεβείᾳ καὶ σεμνότητι.

KJVFor kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

Τοῦτο γὰρ καλὸν καὶ ἀπόδεκτον ἐνώπιον τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Θεοῦ,

KJVFor this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

This is good, and pleases God our Savior,

ὃς πάντας ἀνθρώπους θέλει σωθῆναι καὶ εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν ἀληθείας ἐλθεῖν.

KJVWho will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

εἷς γὰρ Θεός, εἷς καὶ μεσίτης Θεοῦ καὶ ἀνθρώπων, ἄνθρωπος Χριστὸς Ἰησοῦς,

KJVFor there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,

ὁ δοὺς ἑαυτὸν ἀντίλυτρον ὑπὲρ πάντων, τὸ μαρτύριον καιροῖς ἰδίοις,

KJVWho gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.

εἰς ὃ ἐτέθην ἐγὼ κῆρυξ καὶ ἀπόστολος· ἀλήθειαν λέγω ἐν Χριστῷ, οὐ ψεύδομαι· διδάσκαλος ἐθνῶν ἐν πίστει καὶ ἀληθείᾳ.

KJVWhereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.

And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle — I am telling the truth, I am not lying — and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles.

Βούλομαι οὖν προσεύχεσθαι τοὺς ἄνδρας ἐν παντὶ τόπῳ, ἐπαίροντας ὁσίους χεῖρας, χωρὶς ὀργῆς καὶ διαλογισμοῦ.

KJVI will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing.

Ὡσαύτως καὶ τὰς γυναῖκας ἐν καταστολῇ κοσμίῳ, μετὰ αἰδοῦς καὶ σωφροσύνης, κοσμεῖν ἑαυτάς, μὴ ἐν πλέγμασιν, ἢ χρυσῷ, ἢ μαργαρίταις, ἢ ἱματισμῷ πολυτελεῖ,

KJVIn like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,

ἀλλ' ὃ πρέπει γυναιξὶν ἐπαγγελλομέναις θεοσέβειαν, δι' ἔργων ἀγαθῶν.

KJVBut (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

Γυνὴ ἐν ἡσυχίᾳ μανθανέτω ἐν πάσῃ ὑποταγῇ.

KJVLet the woman learn in silence with all subjection.

A woman should learn in quietness and full submission.

Γυναικὶ δὲ διδάσκειν οὐκ ἐπιτρέπω, οὐδὲ αὐθεντεῖν ἀνδρός, ἀλλ' εἶναι ἐν ἡσυχίᾳ.

KJVBut I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.

Ἀδὰμ γὰρ πρῶτος ἐπλάσθη, εἶτα Εὔα·

KJVFor Adam was first formed, then Eve.

For Adam was formed first, then Eve.

καὶ Ἀδὰμ οὐκ ἠπατήθη, ἡ δὲ γυνὴ ἀπατηθεῖσα ἐν παραβάσει γέγονεν·

KJVAnd Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.

σωθήσεται δὲ διὰ τῆς τεκνογονίας, ἐὰν μείνωσιν ἐν πίστει καὶ ἀγάπῃ καὶ ἁγιασμῷ μετὰ σωφροσύνης.

KJVNotwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

But women will be saved through childbearing — if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.
