Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος· εἴ τις ἐπισκοπῆς ὀρέγεται, καλοῦ ἔργου ἐπιθυμεῖ.

KJVThis is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.

Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task.

Δεῖ οὖν τὸν ἐπίσκοπον ἀνεπίληπτον εἶναι, μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα, νηφάλεον, σώφρονα, κόσμιον, φιλόξενον, διδακτικόν·

KJVA bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,

μὴ πάροινον, μὴ πλήκτην, μὴ αἰσχροκερδῆ, ἀλλ' ἐπιεικῆ, ἄμαχον, ἀφιλάργυρον·

KJVNot given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;

not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου καλῶς προϊστάμενον, τέκνα ἔχοντα ἐν ὑποταγῇ μετὰ πάσης σεμνότητος.

KJVOne that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;

He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect.

Εἰ δέ τις τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου προστῆναι οὐκ οἶδεν, πῶς ἐκκλησίας Θεοῦ ἐπιμελήσεται;

KJV(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?

Μὴ νεόφυτον, ἵνα μὴ τυφωθεὶς εἰς κρίμα ἐμπέσῃ τοῦ διαβόλου.

KJVNot a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil.

Δεῖ δὲ αὐτὸν καὶ μαρτυρίαν καλὴν ἔχειν ἀπὸ τῶν ἔξωθεν, ἵνα μὴ εἰς ὀνειδισμὸν ἐμπέσῃ καὶ παγίδα τοῦ διαβόλου.

KJVMoreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap.

Διακόνους ὡσαύτως σεμνούς, μὴ διλόγους, μὴ οἴνῳ πολλῷ προσέχοντας, μὴ αἰσχροκερδεῖς,

KJVLikewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

In the same way, deacons are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain.

ἔχοντας τὸ μυστήριον τῆς πίστεως ἐν καθαρᾷ συνειδήσει.

KJVHolding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.

Καὶ οὗτοι δὲ δοκιμαζέσθωσαν πρῶτον, εἶτα διακονείτωσαν, ἀνέγκλητοι ὄντες.

KJVAnd let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.

They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.

Γυναῖκας ὡσαύτως σεμνάς, μὴ διαβόλους, νηφαλέους, πιστὰς ἐν πᾶσιν.

KJVEven so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

In the same way, the women are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything.

Διάκονοι ἔστωσαν μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρες, τέκνων καλῶς προϊστάμενοι καὶ τῶν ἰδίων οἴκων.

KJVLet the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

A deacon must be faithful to his wife and must manage his children and his household well.

Οἱ γὰρ καλῶς διακονήσαντες βαθμὸν ἑαυτοῖς καλὸν περιποιοῦνται, καὶ πολλὴν παρρησίαν ἐν πίστει τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ.

KJVFor they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.

Ταῦτά σοι γράφω, ἐλπίζων ἐλθεῖν πρός σε τάχιον·

KJVThese things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:

Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions

ἐὰν δὲ βραδύνω, ἵνα εἰδῇς πῶς δεῖ ἐν οἴκῳ Θεοῦ ἀναστρέφεσθαι, ἥτις ἐστὶν ἐκκλησία Θεοῦ ζῶντος, στύλος καὶ ἑδραίωμα τῆς ἀληθείας.

KJVBut if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

so that, if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God's household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.

καὶ ὁμολογουμένως μέγα ἐστὶ τὸ τῆς εὐσεβείας μυστήριον· Θεὸς ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί, ἐδικαιώθη ἐν Πνεύματι, ὤφθη ἀγγέλοις, ἐκηρύχθη ἐν ἔθνεσιν, ἐπιστεύθη ἐν κόσμῳ, ἀνελήφθη ἐν δόξῃ.

KJVAnd without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great: He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.
