και παραγων ειδεν ανθρωπον τυφλον εκ γενετης

KJVAnd as {Jesus} passed by, he saw a man which was blind from {his} birth.

As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth.

και ηρωτησαν αυτον οι μαθηται αυτου λεγοντες ραββι τις ημαρτεν ουτος η οι γονεις αυτου ινα τυφλος γεννηθη

KJVAnd his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?

His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

απεκριθη ο ιησους ουτε ουτος ημαρτεν ουτε οι γονεις αυτου αλλ ινα φανερωθη τα εργα του θεου εν αυτω

KJVJesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

Jesus answered, “Neither did this man sin, nor his parents; but, that the works of God might be revealed in him.

εμε δει εργαζεσθαι τα εργα του πεμψαντος με εως ημερα εστιν ερχεται νυξ οτε ουδεις δυναται εργαζεσθαι

KJVI must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

I must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day. The night is coming, when no one can work.

οταν εν τω κοσμω ω φως ειμι του κοσμου

KJVAs long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

ταυτα ειπων επτυσεν χαμαι και εποιησεν πηλον εκ του πτυσματος και επεχρισεν τον πηλον επι τους οφθαλμους του τυφλου

KJVWhen he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, {anointed...: or, spread the clay upon the eyes of the blind man}

When he had said this, he spat on the ground, made mud with the saliva, anointed the blind man’s eyes with the mud,

και ειπεν αυτω υπαγε νιψαι εις την κολυμβηθραν του σιλωαμ ο ερμηνευεται απεσταλμενος απηλθεν ουν και ενιψατο και ηλθεν βλεπων

KJVAnd said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.

and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means “Sent”). So he went away, washed, and came back seeing.

οι ουν γειτονες και οι θεωρουντες αυτον το προτερον οτι τυφλος ην ελεγον ουχ ουτος εστιν ο καθημενος και προσαιτων

KJVThe neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?

The neighbors therefore, and those who saw that he was blind before, said, “Isn’t this he who sat and begged?”

αλλοι ελεγον οτι ουτος εστιν αλλοι δε οτι ομοιος αυτω εστιν εκεινος ελεγεν οτι εγω ειμι

KJVSome said, This is he: others {said}, He is like him: {but} he said, I am {he}.

Others were saying, “It is he.” Still others were saying, “He looks like him.” He said, “I am he.”

ελεγον ουν αυτω πως ανεωχθησαν σου οι οφθαλμοι

KJVTherefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?

They therefore were asking him, “How were your eyes opened?”

απεκριθη εκεινος και ειπεν ανθρωπος λεγομενος ιησους πηλον εποιησεν και επεχρισεν μου τους οφθαλμους και ειπεν μοι υπαγε εις την κολυμβηθραν του σιλωαμ και νιψαι απελθων δε και νιψαμενος ανεβλεψα

KJVHe answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.

He answered, “A man called Jesus made mud, anointed my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash.’ So I went away and washed, and I received sight.”

ειπον ουν αυτω που εστιν εκεινος λεγει ουκ οιδα

KJVThen said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.

Then they asked him, “Where is he?” He said, “I don’t know.”

αγουσιν αυτον προς τους φαρισαιους τον ποτε τυφλον

KJVThey brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.

They brought him who had been blind to the Pharisees.

14

ην δε σαββατον οτε τον πηλον εποιησεν ο ιησους και ανεωξεν αυτου τους οφθαλμους

KJVAnd it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

It was a Sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.

παλιν ουν ηρωτων αυτον και οι φαρισαιοι πως ανεβλεψεν ο δε ειπεν αυτοις πηλον επεθηκεν επι τους οφθαλμους μου και ενιψαμην και βλεπω

KJVThen again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.

Again therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he received his sight. He said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, I washed, and I see.”

ελεγον ουν εκ των φαρισαιων τινες ουτος ο ανθρωπος ουκ εστιν παρα του θεου οτι το σαββατον ου τηρει αλλοι ελεγον πως δυναται ανθρωπος αμαρτωλος τοιαυτα σημεια ποιειν και σχισμα ην εν αυτοις

KJVTherefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.

Some therefore of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, because he doesn’t keep the Sabbath.” Others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” There was division among them.

λεγουσιν τω τυφλω παλιν συ τι λεγεις περι αυτου οτι ηνοιξεν σου τους οφθαλμους ο δε ειπεν οτι προφητης εστιν

KJVThey say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.

Therefore they asked the blind man again, “What do you say about him, because he opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.”

ουκ επιστευσαν ουν οι ιουδαιοι περι αυτου οτι τυφλος ην και ανεβλεψεν εως οτου εφωνησαν τους γονεις αυτου του αναβλεψαντος

KJVBut the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.

The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and had received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight,

και ηρωτησαν αυτους λεγοντες ουτος εστιν ο υιος υμων ον υμεις λεγετε οτι τυφλος εγεννηθη πως ουν αρτι βλεπει

KJVAnd they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?

and asked them, “Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? How then does he now see?”

απεκριθησαν αυτοις οι γονεις αυτου και ειπον οιδαμεν οτι ουτος εστιν ο υιος ημων και οτι τυφλος εγεννηθη

KJVHis parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:

His parents answered them, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;

πως δε νυν βλεπει ουκ οιδαμεν η τις ηνοιξεν αυτου τους οφθαλμους ημεις ουκ οιδαμεν αυτος ηλικιαν εχει αυτον ερωτησατε αυτος περι αυτου 848 αυτου 846 {P-GSM} λαλησει

KJVBut by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.

but how he now sees, we don’t know; or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. He is of age. Ask him. He will speak for himself.”

ταυτα ειπον οι γονεις αυτου οτι εφοβουντο τους ιουδαιους ηδη γαρ συνετεθειντο οι ιουδαιοι ινα εαν τις αυτον ομολογηση χριστον αποσυναγωγος γενηται

KJVThese {words} spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.

His parents said these things because they feared the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if any man would confess him as Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue.

δια τουτο οι γονεις αυτου ειπον οτι ηλικιαν εχει αυτον ερωτησατε

KJVTherefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.

Therefore his parents said, “He is of age. Ask him.”

24

εφωνησαν ουν εκ δευτερου τον ανθρωπον ος ην τυφλος και ειπον αυτω δος δοξαν τω θεω ημεις οιδαμεν οτι ο ανθρωπος ουτος αμαρτωλος εστιν

KJVThen again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.

So they called the man who was blind a second time, and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.”

απεκριθη ουν εκεινος και ειπεν ει αμαρτωλος εστιν ουκ οιδα εν οιδα οτι τυφλος ων αρτι βλεπω

KJVHe answered and said, Whether he be a sinner {or no}, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.

He therefore answered, “I don’t know if he is a sinner. One thing I do know: that though I was blind, now I see.”

ειπον δε αυτω παλιν τι εποιησεν σοι πως ηνοιξεν σου τους οφθαλμους

KJVThen said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?

They said to him again, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”

27

απεκριθη αυτοις ειπον υμιν ηδη και ουκ ηκουσατε τι παλιν θελετε ακουειν μη και υμεις θελετε αυτου μαθηται γενεσθαι

KJVHe answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear {it} again? will ye also be his disciples?

He answered them, “I told you already, and you didn’t listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don’t also want to become his disciples, do you?”

ελοιδορησαν ουν αυτον και ειπον συ ει μαθητης εκεινου ημεις δε του μωσεως εσμεν μαθηται

KJVThen they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples.

They insulted him and said, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.

ημεις οιδαμεν οτι μωση λελαληκεν ο θεος τουτον δε ουκ οιδαμεν ποθεν εστιν

KJVWe know that God spake unto Moses: {as for} this {fellow}, we know not from whence he is.

We know that God has spoken to Moses. But as for this man, we don’t know where he comes from.”

απεκριθη ο ανθρωπος και ειπεν αυτοις εν γαρ τουτω θαυμαστον εστιν οτι υμεις ουκ οιδατε ποθεν εστιν και ανεωξεν μου τους οφθαλμους

KJVThe man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and {yet} he hath opened mine eyes.

The man answered them, “How amazing! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.

31

οιδαμεν δε οτι αμαρτωλων ο θεος ουκ ακουει αλλ εαν τις θεοσεβης η και το θελημα αυτου ποιη τουτου ακουει

KJVNow we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God, and does his will, he listens to him.

32

εκ του αιωνος ουκ ηκουσθη οτι ηνοιξεν τις οφθαλμους τυφλου γεγεννημενου

KJVSince the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.

Since the world began it has never been heard of that anyone opened the eyes of someone born blind.

33

ει μη ην ουτος παρα θεου ουκ ηδυνατο ποιειν ουδεν

KJVIf this man were not of God, he could do nothing.

If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”

34

απεκριθησαν και ειπον αυτω εν αμαρτιαις συ εγεννηθης ολος και συ διδασκεις ημας και εξεβαλον αυτον εξω

KJVThey answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out. {cast...: or, excommunicated him}

They answered him, “You were altogether born in sins, and do you teach us?” They threw him out.

ηκουσεν ο ιησους οτι εξεβαλον αυτον εξω και ευρων αυτον ειπεν αυτω συ πιστευεις εις τον υιον του θεου

KJVJesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?

Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and finding him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of God?”

απεκριθη εκεινος και ειπεν τις εστιν κυριε ινα πιστευσω εις αυτον

KJVHe answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?

He answered, “Who is he, Lord, that I may believe in him?”

37

ειπεν δε αυτω ο ιησους και εωρακας αυτον και ο λαλων μετα σου εκεινος εστιν

KJVAnd Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.

Jesus said to him, “You have both seen him, and it is he who speaks with you.”

38

ο δε εφη πιστευω κυριε και προσεκυνησεν αυτω

KJVAnd he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.

He said, “Lord, I believe!” and he worshiped him.

39

και ειπεν ο ιησους εις κριμα εγω εις τον κοσμον τουτον ηλθον ινα οι μη βλεποντες βλεπωσιν και οι βλεποντες τυφλοι γενωνται

KJVAnd Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.

Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, that those who don’t see may see; and that those who see may become blind.”

40

και ηκουσαν εκ των φαρισαιων ταυτα οι οντες μετ αυτου και ειπον αυτω μη και ημεις τυφλοι εσμεν

KJVAnd {some} of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?

Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said to him, “Are we also blind?”

41

ειπεν αυτοις ο ιησους ει τυφλοι ητε ουκ αν ειχετε αμαρτιαν νυν δε λεγετε οτι βλεπομεν η ουν αμαρτια υμων μενει

KJVJesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains.
