1 Esdras 5:65

ὥστε τὸν λαὸν μὴ ἀκούειν τῶν σαλπίγγων διὰ τὸν κλαυθμὸν τοῦ λαοῦ· ὁ γὰρ ὄχλος ἦν ὁ σαλπίζων μεγάλως, ὥστε μακρόθεν ἀκούεσθαι.
King James Version (KJV)

Insomuch that the trumpets might not be heard for the weeping of the people: yet the multitude sounded marvellously, so that it was heard afar off.

Modern English

so that the trumpets could hardly be heard over the people's weeping; yet the crowd made such a tremendous sound that it carried far away.
