1 Maccabees

1 Maccabees 11:4

King James Version (KJV)

And when he came near to Azotus, they shewed him the temple of Dagon that was burnt, and Azotus and the suburbs thereof that were destroyed, and the bodies that were cast abroad and them that he had burnt in the battle; for they had made heaps of them by the way where he should pass.

Modern English

When he came near Ashdod, they showed him the burned temple of Dagon, the ruined city of Ashdod and its surrounding villages, and the bodies scattered about and burned in the battle, since they had piled them along the road he would travel.
