1 Maccabees 2:7

καὶ εἶπεν Οἴμμοι, ἵνα τί τοῦτο ἐγεννήθην ἰδεῖν τὸ σύντριμμα τοῦ λαοῦ μου καὶ τὸ σύντριμμα τῆς ἁγίας πόλεως καὶ καθίσαι ἐκεῖ ἐν τῷ δοθῆναι αὐτὴν ἐν χειρὶ ἐχθρῶν, τὸ ἁγίασμα ἐν χειρὶ ἀλλοτρίων;
King James Version (KJV)

He said, Woe is me! wherefore was I born to see this misery of my people, and of the holy city, and to dwell there, when it was delivered into the hand of the enemy, and the sanctuary into the hand of strangers?

Modern English

he said, "Woe is me! Why was I born to see the ruin of my people and of the holy city, and to sit here while it is handed over to the enemy and the sanctuary to strangers?
