1 Maccabees 6:9

καὶ ἦν ἐκεῖ ἡμέρας πλείους, ὅτι ἀνεκαινίσθη ἐπ’ αὐτὸν λύπη μεγάλη, καὶ ἐλογίσατο ὅτι ἀποθνῄσκει.

And there he continued many days: for his grief was ever more and more, and he made account that he should die.

Modern English

He remained there many days, his grief growing steadily worse, until he realized he was going to die.
