1 Maccabees 9:6

καὶ εἶδον τὸ πλῆθος τῶν δυνάμεων ὅτι πολλοί εἰσιν, καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν σφόδρα· καὶ ἐξερρύησαν πολλοὶ ἀπὸ τῆς παρεμβολῆς, οὐ κατελείφθησαν ἐξ αὐτῶν ἀλλ’ ἢ ὀκτακόσιοι ἄνδρες.

Who seeing the multitude of the other army to be so great were sore afraid; whereupon many conveyed themselves out of the host, insomuch as there abode of them no more but eight hundred men.

Modern English

but when they saw how vast the enemy army was, they were badly frightened, and many slipped away from the camp until only eight hundred men remained.
