2 Maccabees

2 Maccabees 15:21

King James Version (KJV)

Maccabeus seeing the coming of the multitude, and the divers preparations of armour, and the fierceness of the beasts, stretched out his hands toward heaven, and called upon the Lord that worketh wonders, knowing that victory cometh not by arms, but even as it seemeth good to him, he giveth it to such as are worthy:

Modern English

Maccabeus, seeing the size of the approaching multitude, the variety of weaponry, and the ferocity of the beasts, stretched out his hands toward heaven and called upon the Lord who works wonders, knowing that victory does not come through weapons, but that he grants it to those he judges worthy, according to his own will.
