2 Maccabees

2 Maccabees 7:18

King James Version (KJV)

After him also they brought the sixth, who being ready to die said, Be not deceived without cause: for we suffer these things for ourselves, having sinned against our God: therefore marvellous things are done unto us.

Modern English

After him they brought the sixth, who, as he was dying, said, Do not deceive yourself for no reason: we suffer these things because of our own sins against our God, and that is why such astonishing things are happening to us.
