2 Maccabees 7:2

εἷς δὲ αὐτῶν γενόμενος προήγορος οὕτως ἔφη Τί μέλλεις ἐρωτᾶν καὶ μανθάνειν ἡμῶν; ἕτοιμοι γὰρ ἀποθνῄσκειν ἐσμὲν ἢ παραβαίνειν τοὺς πατρίους νόμους.
King James Version (KJV)

But one of them that spake first said thus, What wouldest thou ask or learn of us? we are ready to die, rather than to transgress the laws of our fathers.

Modern English

One of them, speaking for the rest, said, What do you want to ask or learn from us? We are ready to die rather than break the laws of our ancestors.
