Here therefore, being plagued, he began to leave off his great pride, and to come to the knowledge of himself by the scourge of God, his pain increasing every moment.
It was under this affliction that he finally began to abandon his great arrogance and come to his senses under the lash of God's punishment, as his pain grew worse by the moment.
