2 Maccabees

2 Maccabees 9:2

King James Version (KJV)

For he had entered the city called Persepolis, and went about to rob the temple, and to hold the city; whereupon the multitude running to defend themselves with their weapons put them to flight; and so it happened, that Antiochus being put to flight of the inhabitants returned with shame.

Modern English

He had entered the city called Persepolis intending to plunder the temple and seize control of the city, but the population rose up in arms to defend themselves and drove him off, so that Antiochus, put to flight by the very inhabitants, had to withdraw in shame.
