וַיִּקָּבְצ֧וּ כָל יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶל דָּוִ֖יד חֶבְר֣וֹנָה לֵאמֹ֑ר הִנֵּ֥ה עַצְמְךָ֖ וּבְשָׂרְךָ֥ אֲנָֽחְנוּ׃

KJVThen all Israel gathered themselves to David unto Hebron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.

Then all Israel gathered together to David at Hebron and said: Behold, we are your bone and flesh.

גַּ֣ם תְּמ֣וֹל גַּ֣ם שִׁלְשׁ֡וֹם גַּ֣ם בִּֽהְיוֹת֩ שָׁא֨וּל מֶ֜לֶךְ אַתָּ֣ה הַ֠מּוֹצִיא וְהַמֵּבִ֣יא אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ לְךָ֕ אַתָּ֕ה תִּרְעֶ֖ה אֶת עַמִּ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְאַתָּ֣ה תִהְיֶ֔ה נָגִ֖יד עַ֥ל עַמִּ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

KJVAnd moreover in time past, even when Saul was king, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel.

In times past, even when Saul was king, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the LORD your God said to you: You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over my people Israel.

וַיָּבֹ֤אוּ כָּל זִקְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶל הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ חֶבְר֑וֹנָה וַיִּכְרֹ֨ת דָּוִ֤יד לָהֶם֙ בְּרִ֣ית בְּחֶבְר֔וֹן לִפְנֵ֖י יְהוָ֑ה וַיִּמְשְׁח֧וּ אֶת דָּוִ֛יד לְמֶ֥לֶךְ עַל יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל כִּדְבַ֥ר יְהוָ֥ה בְּיַד שְׁמוּאֵֽל׃

KJVTherefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel.

So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD. And they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel.

וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ דָּוִ֛יד וְכָל יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל יְרוּשָׁלַ֑͏ִם הִ֥יא יְבוּ֖ס וְשָׁ֥ם הַיְבוּסִ֖י יֹשְׁבֵ֥י הָאָֽרֶץ׃

KJVAnd David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, which is Jebus; where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land.

And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, that is, Jebus, where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land.

וַיֹּאמְר֧וּ יֹשְׁבֵ֛י יְב֖וּס לְדָוִ֑יד לֹ֥א תָב֖וֹא הֵֽנָּה וַיִּלְכֹּ֧ד דָּוִ֛יד אֶת מְצֻדַ֥ת צִיּ֖וֹן הִ֥יא עִ֖יר דָּוִֽיד׃

KJVAnd the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, Thou shalt not come hither. Nevertheless David took the castle of Zion, which is the city of David.

The inhabitants of Jebus said to David: You will not come in here. Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר דָּוִ֗יד כָּל מַכֵּ֥ה יְב֛וּסִי בָּרִאשׁוֹנָ֖ה יִהְיֶ֣ה לְרֹ֣אשׁ וּלְשָׂ֑ר וַיַּ֙עַל֙ בָּרִ֣אשׁ֣וֹנָ֔ה יוֹאָ֥ב בֶּן צְרוּיָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י לְרֹֽאשׁ׃

KJVAnd David said, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. So Joab the son of Zeruiah went first up, and was chief.

And David said: Whoever strikes the Jebusites first shall be chief and commander. And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief.

וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב דָּוִ֣יד בַּמְּצָ֑ד עַ֥ל כֵּ֖ן קָרְא֥וּ ל֛וֹ עִ֥יר דָּוִֽיד׃

KJVAnd David dwelt in the castle; therefore they called it the city of David.

And David lived in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David.

וַיִּ֤בֶן הָעִיר֙ מִסָּבִ֔יב מִן הַמִּלּ֖וֹא וְעַ֣ד הַסָּבִ֑יב וְיוֹאָ֖ב יְחַיֶּ֥ה אֶת שְׁאָ֥ר הָעִֽיר׃

KJVAnd he built the city round about, even from Millo round about: and Joab repaired the rest of the city.

And he built the city around it from the Millo in complete circuit, and Joab repaired the rest of the city.

9

וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ דָּוִ֛יד הָל֥וֹךְ וְגָד֖וֹל וַ֥יהוָה צְבָא֖וֹת עִמּֽוֹ׃

KJVSo David waxed greater and greater: for the LORD of hosts was with him.

And David became greater and greater, for the LORD of hosts was with him.

10

וְאֵ֗לֶּה רָאשֵׁ֛י הַגִּבּוֹרִ֥ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר לְדָוִ֑יד הַמִּתְחַזְּקִ֣ים עִמּ֗וֹ בְּמַלְכוּת֛וֹ עִם כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל לְהַמְלִיכ֥וֹ כִּדְבַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה עַל יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

KJVThese also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.

Now these are the chiefs of David's mighty men, who gave him strong support in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.

וְאֵ֖לֶּה מִסְפַּ֣ר הַגִּבֹּרִ֑ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְדָוִ֗יד יָשָׁבְעָ֤ם בֶּן חַכְמֹנִי֙ רֹ֣אשׁ הַשָּׁלִישִׁ֔ים ה֞וּא עוֹרֵ֣ר אֶת חֲנִית֗וֹ עַל שְׁלֹשׁ מֵא֛וֹת חָלָ֖ל בְּפַ֥עַם אֶחָֽת׃

KJVAnd this is the number of the mighty men whom David had; Jashobeam, an Hachmonite, the chief of the captains: he lifted up his spear against three hundred slain by him at one time.

This is an account of David's mighty men: Jashobeam, a Hachmonite, was chief of the three. He wielded his spear against 300, whom he killed at one time.

וְאַחֲרָ֥יו אֶלְעָזָ֖ר בֶּן דּ֑וֹדוֹ הָֽאַחֹחִ֖י ה֥וּא בִּשְׁלוֹשָׁ֖ה הַגִּבֹּרִֽים׃

KJVAnd after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighties.

And next to him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite. He was with David at Pas-dammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle.

ה֣וּא הָיָ֤ה עִם דָּוִיד֙ בְּפַ֣ס דַּמִּ֔ים וְהַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים נֶאֶסְפ֣וּ שָׁ֑מָּה לַמִּלְחָמָ֗ה וַיְהִ֞י חֶלְקַ֤ת הַשָּׂדֶה֙ מְלֵאָ֣ה שְׂעֹרִ֔ים וְהָעָ֖ם נָ֥ס מִפְּנֵ֥י פְלִשְׁתִּֽים׃

KJVHe was with David at Pasdammim, and there the Philistines were gathered together to battle, where was a parcel of ground full of barley; and the people fled from before the Philistines.

He was with David at Pas-dammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle. There was a plot of ground full of barley, and the men fled from the Philistines.

וַיִּֽתְיַצְּב֞וּ בְּת֣וֹךְ הַחֶלְקָ֗ה וַֽיַּצִּילֻ֑הָ וַיַּכּ֥וּ אֶת פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים וַיּ֗וֹשַׁע יְהוָ֛ה תְּשׁוּעָ֥ה גְדוֹלָֽה׃

KJVAnd they set themselves in the midst of that parcel, and delivered it, and slew the Philistines; and the LORD saved them by a great deliverance.

But they took their stand in the midst of the plot and defended it and killed the Philistines. And the LORD saved them by a great victory.

15

וַיֵּרְד֤וּ שְׁלֹשָׁה֙ מִן הַשְּׁלֹשִׁ֔ים רֹ֖אשׁ עַל הַצּ֑וּר אֶל דָּוִ֕יד אֶל מְעָרַ֖ת עֲדֻלָּ֑ם וּמַחֲנֵ֥ה פְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים חֹנָ֥ה בְּעֵ֥מֶק רְפָאִֽים׃

KJVNow three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim.

Three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David at the cave of Adullam, when the army of the Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim.

וְדָוִ֖יד אָ֣ז בַּמְּצוּדָ֑ה וּנְצִ֥יב פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים אָ֥ז בְּבֵ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃

KJVAnd David was then in the hold, and the Philistines' garrison was then at Bethlehem.

David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then at Bethlehem.

17

וַיִּתְאַוֶּ֥ה דָוִ֖יד וַיֹּאמַ֑ר מִ֣י יַשְׁקֵ֔נִי מַ֕יִם מִבּ֥וֹר בֵּֽית לֶ֖חֶם אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּשָּֽׁעַר׃

KJVAnd David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is at the gate!

And David said longingly: Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem that is by the gate!

18

וַיִּבְקְע֣וּ הַשְּׁלֹשָׁ֗ה בְּמַחֲנֵה֙ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיִּשְׁאֲב֣וּ מַ֔יִם מִבּ֥וֹר בֵּֽית לֶ֖חֶם אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּשָּׁ֑עַר וַיִּשְׂאוּ֙ וַיָּבִ֣יאוּ אֶל דָּוִ֔יד וְלֹ֨א אָבָ֤ה דָוִיד֙ לִשְׁתּ֣וֹתָ֔ם וַיְנַסְּכֵ֖ם לַיהוָֽה׃

KJVAnd the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD,

And the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and carried and brought it to David. But David would not drink of it. He poured it out to the LORD

19

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר חָלִ֣ילָה לִּי֮ מֵאֱלֹהַ֒י מֵעֲשׂ֣וֹת זֹּ֔את הֲדַ֨ם הָאֲנָשִׁ֤ים הָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ אֶשְׁתֶּ֔ה בְּנַפְשׁוֹתָ֖ם כִּ֣י בְנַפְשׁוֹתָ֣ם הֵבִיאֻ֔הָ וְלֹ֥א אָבָ֖ה לִשְׁתּוֹתָ֑הּ אֵ֖לֶּה עָשׂ֥וּ שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת הַגִּבֹּרִֽים׃

KJVAnd said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.

and said: Far be it from me before my God that I should do this. Shall I drink the lifeblood of these men? For at the risk of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men.

20

וַאֲבִישַׁ֥י אֲחִ֖י יוֹאָ֑ב ה֣וּא הָיָ֞ה רֹ֣אשׁ הַשְּׁלוֹשָׁ֗ה וְה֞וּא עוֹרֵ֣ר אֶת חֲנִית֗וֹ עַל שְׁלֹשׁ מֵא֛וֹת חָלָ֖ל וְל֥וֹ שֵׁ֖ם בַּשְּׁלוֹשָֽׁה׃

KJVAnd Abishai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the three: for lifting up his spear against three hundred, he slew them, and had a name among the three.

Now Abishai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the thirty. And he wielded his spear against 300 men and killed them and won a name beside the three.

21

מִן הַשְּׁלוֹשָׁ֛ה בַּשְּׁנַ֖יִם נִכְבָּ֑ד וַיְהִ֤י לָהֶם֙ לְשַׂ֣ר וְעַד הַשְּׁלוֹשָׁ֔ה לֹ֥א בָ֖א׃

KJVOf the three, he was more honourable than the two; for he was their captain: howbeit he attained not to the first three.

He was the most renowned of the thirty and became their commander, but he did not attain to the three.

22

בְּנָיָ֣הוּ בֶן יְהוֹיָדָ֗ע בֶּן אִ֣ישׁ חַ֣יִל רַב פְּעָלִ֗ים מִקַּבְצְאֵ֑ל ה֣וּא הִכָּ֣ה אֶת שְׁנֵ֣י אֲרִיאֵ֣ל מוֹאָ֗ב וְה֣וּא יָרַ֞ד וְהִכָּ֣ה אֶת הָֽאֲרִ֔י בְּת֥וֹךְ הַבּ֖וֹר בְּי֥וֹם הַשָּֽׁלֶג׃

KJVBenaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done many acts; he slew two lionlike men of Moab: also he went down and slew a lion in a pit in a snowy day.

And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was a valiant man of Kabzeel, a doer of great deeds. He struck down two heroes of Moab. He also went down and struck down a lion in a pit on a day when snow had fallen.

23

וְה֣וּא הִכָּ֣ה אֶת הָאִ֗ישׁ הַמִּצְרִי֙ אִ֣ישׁ מִדָּ֔ה חָמֵ֥שׁ בָּאַמָּ֖ה וּבְיַ֣ד הַמִּצְרִ֣י חֲנִ֑ית כַּמְנֹ֣ר אָרָ֗ג וַיֵּ֨רֶד אֵלָ֜יו בַּשָּׁ֗בֶט וַֽיִּגְזֹ֤ל אֶת הַחֲנִית֙ מִיַּ֣ד הַמִּצְרִ֔י וַיַּהַרְגֵ֖הוּ בַּחֲנִיתֽוֹ׃

KJVAnd he slew an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits high; and in the Egyptian's hand was a spear like a weaver's beam; and he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and slew him with his own spear.

And he struck down an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits tall. The Egyptian had in his hand a spear like a weaver's beam, but Benaiah went down to him with a staff and snatched the spear out of the Egyptian's hand and killed him with his own spear.

24

אֵ֚לֶּה עָשָׂ֣ה בְנָיָ֔הוּ בֶּן יְהוֹיָדָ֖ע וְל֣וֹ שֵׁ֑ם בִּשְׁלֹ֖שָׁה הַגִּבֹּרִֽים׃

KJVThese things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had the name among the three mighties.

These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and won a name beside the three mighty men.

25

הִנֵּ֤ה ה֣וּא נִכְבָּד֮ מִן הַשְּׁלֹשִׁים֒ וְאֶ֨ל הַשְּׁלֹשָׁ֤ה לֹא בָ֙א֙ וַיְשִׂמֵ֣הוּ דָוִ֔יד עַ֖ל מִשְׁמַעְתּֽוֹ׃

KJVBehold, he was honourable among the thirty, but attained not to the first three: and David set him over his guard.

Behold, he was renowned among the thirty, but he did not attain to the three. And David set him over his bodyguard.

26

וְגִבּוֹרֵ֖י הַחֲיָלִ֑ים עֲשָׂהאֵ֥ל אֲחִ֖י יוֹאָ֥ב אֶלְחָנָ֣ן בֶּן דּ֖וֹד֥וֹ מִבֵּ֥ית לֶֽחֶם׃

KJVAlso the valiant men of the armies were, Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem,

There were also mighty warriors: Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem,

שַׁמּ֥וֹת הַהֲרוֹרִ֖י חֶ֥לֶץ הַפְּלוֹנִֽי׃

KJVShammoth the Harorite, Helez the Pelonite,

עִירָ֥א בֶן עִקֵּ֖שׁ הַתְּקוֹעִ֑י אֲבִיעֶ֖זֶר הָעַנְּתֹתִֽי׃

KJVIra the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, Abiezer the Antothite,

Ira the son of Ikkesh of Tekoa, Abiezer of Anathoth,

סִבְּכַ֥י הַחֻשָׁתִ֖י עִילַ֥י הָאֲחֹחִֽי׃

מַהֲרַ֥י הַנְּטוֹפָתִ֖י חֵ֥לֶד בֶּן בַּעֲנָ֥ה הַנְּטוֹפָתִֽי׃

KJVMaharai the Netophathite, Heled the son of Baanah the Netophathite,

יִתַּ֛י בֶּן רִיבַ֥י מִגִּבְעַ֖ת בְּנֵ֣י בִנְיָמִ֑ן בְּנָיָ֖הוּ הַפִּרְעָתֹנִֽי׃

KJVIthai the son of Ribai of Gibeah, that pertained to the children of Benjamin, Benaiah the Pirathonite,

חוּרַ֥י מִנַּחֲלֵ֖י גָּ֑עַשׁ אֲבִיאֵ֖ל הָעַרְבָּתִֽי׃

אֱלִיאֵ֤ל הַמָּחֲוִים֙ וִיֽרִיבַ֔י וְיוֹשַׁוְיָ֕ה בְּנֵ֖י אֶלְנָ֑עַם וְיִתְמָ֖ה הַמּוֹאָבִֽי׃

KJVEliel the Mahavite, and Jeribai, and Joshaviah, the sons of Elnaam, and Ithmah the Moabite,

47

אֱלִיאֵ֤ל וְעוֹבֵד֙ וְיַעֲשִׂיאֵ֣ל הַמְּצֹֽבָיָ֔ה׃

KJVEliel, and Obed, and Jasiel the Mesobaite.
