מַשְׂכִּ֥יל לְאָסָ֑ף הַאֲזִ֥ינָה עַ֝מִּ֗י תּוֹרָתִ֥י הַטּ֥וּ אָ֝זְנְכֶ֗ם לְאִמְרֵי פִֽי׃
KJVMaschil of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
A Maskil of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth!

אֶפְתְּחָ֣ה בְמָשָׁ֣ל פִּ֑י אַבִּ֥יעָ֗ה חִיד֥וֹת מִנִּי קֶֽדֶם׃
KJVI will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:

אֲשֶׁ֣ר שָׁמַ֣עְנוּ וַנֵּדָ֑עֵם וַ֝אֲבוֹתֵ֗ינוּ סִפְּרוּ לָֽנוּ׃
KJVWhich we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us.

לֹ֥א נְכַחֵ֗ד מִבְּנֵ֫יהֶ֥ם לְד֣וֹר אַחֲר֣וֹן מְסַפְּרִ֣ים תְּהִלּ֣וֹת יְהוָ֑ה וֶעֱזוּז֥וֹ וְ֝נִפְלְאוֹתָ֗יו אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָֽׂה׃
KJVWe will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.
We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.

וַיָּ֤קֶם עֵד֨וּת ׀ בְּיַעֲקֹ֗ב וְתוֹרָה֮ שָׂ֪ם בְּיִשְׂרָ֫אֵ֥ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר צִ֭וָּה אֶת אֲבוֹתֵ֑ינוּ לְהוֹדִיעָ֥ם לִ֝בְנֵיהֶֽם׃
KJVFor he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:

לְמַ֤עַן יֵדְע֨וּ ׀ דּ֣וֹר אַחֲר֗וֹן בָּ֭נִים יִוָּלֵ֑דוּ יָ֝קֻ֗מוּ וִֽיסַפְּר֥וּ לִבְנֵיהֶֽם׃
KJVThat the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:
that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children,

וְיָשִׂ֥ימוּ בֵֽאלֹהִ֗ים כִּסְלָ֗ם וְלֹ֣א יִ֭שְׁכְּחוּ מַעַלְלֵ֣י אֵ֑ל וּ֝מִצְוֹתָ֗יו יִנְצֹֽרוּ׃
KJVThat they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:
so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments;

וְלֹ֡א יִהְי֣וּ כַ֭אֲבוֹתָם דּ֣וֹר סוֹרֵ֣ר וּמֹרֶ֑ה דּ֤וֹר לֹא הֵכִ֥ין לִ֝בּ֗וֹ וְלֹא נֶאֶמְנָ֥ה אֶת אֵ֣ל רוּחֽוֹ׃
KJVAnd might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.
and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God.

בְּנֵי אֶפְרַ֥יִם נוֹשְׁקֵ֥י רֽוֹמֵי קָ֑שֶׁת הָ֝פְכ֗וּ בְּי֣וֹם קְרָֽב׃
KJVThe children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.
The Ephraimites, armed with the bow, turned back on the day of battle.

לֹ֣א שָׁ֭מְרוּ בְּרִ֣ית אֱלֹהִ֑ים וּ֝בְתוֹרָת֗וֹ מֵאֲנ֥וּ לָלֶֽכֶת׃
KJVThey kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;
They did not keep God's covenant, but refused to walk according to his law.

וַֽ֭יִּשְׁכְּחוּ עֲלִילוֹתָ֑יו וְ֝נִפְלְאוֹתָ֗יו אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֶרְאָֽם׃
KJVAnd forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.
They forgot his works and the wonders that he had shown them.

נֶ֣גֶד אֲ֭בוֹתָם עָ֣שָׂה פֶ֑לֶא בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִ֝צְרַ֗יִם שְׂדֵ֣ה צֽוֹעַן׃
KJVMarvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
In the sight of their fathers he performed wonders in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan.

בָּקַ֣ע יָ֭ם וַיַּעֲבִירֵ֑ם וַ֝יַּצֶּב מַ֣יִם כְּמוֹ נֵֽד׃
KJVHe divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap.
He divided the sea and let them pass through it, and made the waters stand like a heap.
14
וַֽ֭יַּנְחֵם בֶּעָנָ֣ן יוֹמָ֑ם וְכָל הַ֝לַּ֗יְלָה בְּא֣וֹר אֵֽשׁ׃
KJVIn the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.
In the daytime he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a fiery light.
15
יְבַקַּ֣ע צֻרִ֣ים בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר וַ֝יַּ֗שְׁקְ כִּתְהֹמ֥וֹת רַבָּֽה׃
KJVHe clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths.
He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.
16
וַיּוֹצִ֣א נוֹזְלִ֣ים מִסָּ֑לַע וַיּ֥וֹרֶד כַּ֝נְּהָר֗וֹת מָֽיִם׃
KJVHe brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.
He made streams come out of the rock and caused waters to flow down like rivers.
17
וַ֭יּוֹסִיפוּ עוֹד לַחֲטֹ֣א ל֑וֹ לַמְר֥וֹת עֶ֝לְי֗וֹן בַּצִּיָּֽה׃
KJVAnd they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.
Yet they sinned still more against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert.
18
וַיְנַסּ֣וּ אֵ֭ל בִּלְבָבָ֑ם לִ֝שְׁאָל אֹ֣כֶל לְנַפְשָֽׁם׃
KJVAnd they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.
They tested God in their heart by demanding the food they craved.
19
וַיְדַבְּר֗וּ בֵּֽ֫אלֹהִ֥ים אָ֭מְרוּ הֲיוּכַ֥ל אֵ֝ל לַעֲרֹ֗ךְ שֻׁלְחָ֥ן בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃
KJVYea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?
They spoke against God, saying: Can God spread a table in the wilderness?
20
הֵ֤ן הִכָּה צ֗וּר וַ֫יָּז֥וּבוּ מַ֗יִם וּ֫נְחָלִ֥ים יִשְׁטֹ֑פוּ הֲ֝גַ֗ם לֶ֤חֶם ׀ יוּכַ֖ל תֵּ֣ת אִם יָכִ֣ין שְׁאֵ֣ר לְעַמּֽוֹ׃
KJVBehold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?
He struck the rock so that water gushed out and streams overflowed. Can he also give bread or provide meat for his people?
21
לָ֤כֵן ׀ שָׁ֘מַ֤ע יְהוָ֗ה וַ֭יִּתְעַבָּר וְאֵ֣שׁ נִשְּׂקָ֣ה בְיַעֲקֹ֑ב וְגַ֥ם אַ֝ף עָלָ֗ה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
KJVTherefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;
Therefore, when the LORD heard, he was full of wrath; a fire was kindled against Jacob; his anger rose against Israel,
22
כִּ֣י לֹ֭א הֶאֱמִ֣ינוּ בֵֽאלֹהִ֑ים וְלֹ֣א בָ֝טְח֗וּ בִּישׁוּעָתֽוֹ׃
KJVBecause they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:
because they did not believe in God and did not trust his saving power.
23
וַיְצַ֣ו שְׁחָקִ֣ים מִמָּ֑עַל וְדַלְתֵ֖י שָׁמַ֣יִם פָּתָֽח׃
KJVThough he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,
Yet he commanded the skies above and opened the doors of heaven,
24
וַ֭יַּמְטֵר עֲלֵיהֶ֣ם מָ֑ן לֶ֝אֱכֹ֗ל וּדְגַן שָׁמַ֥יִם נָֽתַן לָֽמוֹ׃
KJVAnd had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.
and he rained down on them manna to eat and gave them the grain of heaven.
25
לֶ֣חֶם אַ֭בִּירִים אָ֣כַל אִ֑ישׁ צֵידָ֥ה שָׁ֝לַ֗ח לָהֶ֥ם לָשֹֽׂבַע׃
KJVMan did eat angels' food: he sent them meat to the full.
Man ate of the bread of the angels; he sent them food in abundance.
26
יַסַּ֣ע קָ֭דִים בַּשָּׁמָ֑יִם וַ֝יְנַהֵ֗ג בְּעֻזּ֥וֹ תֵימָֽן׃
KJVHe caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.
He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens, and by his power he led out the south wind;
27
וַיַּמְטֵ֣ר עֲ֭לֵיהֶם כֶּעָפָ֣ר שְׁאֵ֑ר וּ֝כְח֗וֹל יַמִּ֥ים עֽוֹף כָּנָֽף׃
KJVHe rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:
he rained meat on them like dust, winged birds like the sand of the seas;
28
וַיַּפֵּ֣ל בְּקֶ֣רֶב מַחֲנֵ֑הוּ סָ֝בִ֗יב לְמִשְׁכְּנֹתָֽיו׃
KJVAnd he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.
he let them fall in the midst of their camp, all around their dwellings.
29
וַ֭יֹּאכְלוּ וַיִּשְׂבְּע֣וּ מְאֹ֑ד וְתַאֲוָתָ֥ם יָ֝בִ֗א לָהֶֽם׃
KJVSo they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;
And they ate and were well filled, for he gave them what they craved.
30
לֹ֣א זָ֭רוּ מִתַּאֲוָתָ֑ם ע֗וֹד אָכְלָ֥ם בְּפִיהֶֽם׃
KJVThey were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,
But before they had satisfied their craving, while the food was still in their mouths,
31
וְאַ֤ף אֱלֹהִ֨ים ׀ עָלָ֗ה בָ֭הֶם וַיַּהֲרֹ֣ג בְּמִשְׁמַנֵּיהֶ֑ם וּבַחוּרֵ֥י יִ֝שְׂרָאֵ֗ל הִכְרִֽיעַ׃
KJVThe wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.
the anger of God rose against them, and he killed the strongest of them and laid low the young men of Israel.
32
בְּכָל זֹ֣את חָ֭טְאוּ ע֑וֹד וְ֝לֹ֗א הֶאֱמִ֥ינוּ בְנִפְלְאוֹתָֽיו׃
KJVFor all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.
In spite of all this, they still sinned; despite his wonders, they did not believe.
33
וַיְכַ֣ל בַּהֶ֣בֶל יְמֵיהֶ֑ם וּ֝שְׁנוֹתָ֗ם בַּבֶּהָלָֽה׃
KJVTherefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.
So he made their days vanish like a breath, and their years in terror.
34
אִם הֲרָגָ֗ם וּ֭דְרָשׁוּהוּ וְשָׁ֣בוּ וְשִׁחֲר֣וּ אֵֽל׃
KJVWhen he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God.
When he killed them, they sought him; they repented and sought God earnestly.
35
וַ֭יִּזְכְּרוּ כִּי אֱלֹהִ֣ים צוּרָ֑ם וְאֵ֥ל עֶ֝לְי֗וֹן גֹּאֲלָֽם׃
KJVAnd they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.
They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer.
36
וַ֭יְפַתּוּהוּ בְּפִיהֶ֑ם וּבִלְשׁוֹנָ֥ם יְכַזְּבוּ לֽוֹ׃
KJVNevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.
But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues.
37
וְלִבָּ֥ם לֹא אֵית֑וֹ וְלֹ֥א נֶ֝אֶמְנ֗וּ בִּבְרִיתֽוֹ׃
KJVFor their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.
Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant.
38
וְה֤וּא רַח֗וּם יְכַפֵּ֣ר עָ֭וֹן וְלֹ֣א יַשְׁחִ֑ית וְהִרְבָּ֥ה לְ֝הָשִׁ֗יב אַפּ֗וֹ וְלֹא יָעִ֣יר כָּל חֲמָתֽוֹ׃
KJVBut he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.
Yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them; he restrained his anger often and did not stir up all his wrath.
39
וַ֭יִּזְכֹּר כִּי בָשָׂ֣ר הֵ֑מָּה ר֤וּחַ הוֹלֵ֖ךְ וְלֹ֣א יָשֽׁוּב׃
KJVFor he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.
He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes and comes not again.
40
כַּמָּ֣ה יַמְר֣וּהוּ בַמִּדְבָּ֑ר יַעֲצִיב֥וּהוּ בִישִׁימֽוֹן׃
KJVHow oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!
How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the desert!
41
וַיָּשׁ֣וּבוּ וַיְנַסּ֣וּ אֵ֑ל וּקְד֖וֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל הִתְוּֽ׃
KJVYea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.
They tested God again and again and provoked the Holy One of Israel.
42
לֹ֤א זָכְר֗וּ אֶת יָד֑וֹ י֤וֹם אֲשֶׁר פָּדָ֖ם מִנִּי צָֽר׃
KJVThey remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy.
They did not remember his power, or the day when he redeemed them from the foe,
43
אֲשֶׁר שָׂ֣ם בְּמִצְרַ֣יִם אֹתוֹתָ֑יו וּ֝מוֹפְתָ֗יו בִּשְׂדֵ֥ה צֹֽעַן׃
KJVHow he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan:
when he performed his signs in Egypt and his marvels in the fields of Zoan.
44
וַיַּ֣הֲפֹ֣ךְ לְדָ֣ם יְאֹרֵיהֶ֑ם וְ֝נֹזְלֵיהֶ֗ם בַּל יִשְׁתָּיֽוּן׃
KJVAnd had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.
He turned their rivers to blood, so that they could not drink of their streams.
45
יְשַׁלַּ֣ח בָּהֶ֣ם עָרֹ֣ב וַיֹּאכְלֵ֑ם וּ֝צְפַרְדֵּ֗עַ וַתַּשְׁחִיתֵֽם׃
KJVHe sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.
He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them, and frogs, which destroyed them.
46
וַיִּתֵּ֣ן לֶ֭חָסִיל יְבוּלָ֑ם וִ֝יגִיעָ֗ם לָאַרְבֶּֽה׃
KJVHe gave also their increase unto the caterpiller, and their labour unto the locust.
He gave their crops to the destroying locust and the fruit of their labor to the locust.
47
יַהֲרֹ֣ג בַּבָּרָ֣ד גַּפְנָ֑ם וְ֝שִׁקְמוֹתָ֗ם בַּחֲנָמַֽל׃
KJVHe destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycomore trees with frost.
He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamores with frost.
48
וַיַּסְגֵּ֣ר לַבָּרָ֣ד בְּעִירָ֑ם וּ֝מִקְנֵיהֶ֗ם לָרְשָׁפִֽים׃
KJVHe gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.
He gave over their cattle to the hail and their flocks to thunderbolts.
49
יְשַׁלַּח בָּ֣ם חֲרוֹן אַפּ֑וֹ עֶבְרָ֗ה וָזַ֗עַם וְצָרָ֗ה מִשְׁלַ֗חַת מַלְאֲכֵ֥י רָעִֽים׃
KJVHe cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.
He let loose on them his burning anger, wrath, indignation, and distress, a company of destroying angels.
50
יְפַלֵּ֣ס נָ֭תִיב לְאַפּ֑וֹ לֹ֣א חָ֭שַׂךְ מִמָּ֣וֶת נַפְשָׁ֑ם וְחַיָּתָ֥ם לַדֶּ֗בֶר הִסְגִּֽיר׃
KJVHe made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;
He made a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death, but gave their lives over to the plague.
51
וַ֭יַּךְ כָּל בְּכ֣וֹר בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם רֵאשִׁ֥ית א֝וֹנִ֗ים בְּאָהֳלֵי חָֽם׃
KJVAnd smote all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham:
He struck down every firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham.
52
וַיַּסַּ֣ע כַּצֹּ֣אן עַמּ֑וֹ וַֽ֝יְנַהֲגֵ֗ם כָּעֵ֣דֶר בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃
KJVBut made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
Then he led out his people like sheep and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
53
וַיַּנְחֵ֣ם לָ֭בֶטַח וְלֹ֣א פָחָ֑דוּ וְאֶת אוֹיְבֵיהֶ֗ם כִּסָּ֥ה הַיָּֽם׃
KJVAnd he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
54
וַיְבִיאֵ֗ם אֶל גְּ֭בוּל קָדְשׁ֑וֹ הַ֝ר זֶ֗ה קָנְתָ֥ה יְמִינֽוֹ׃
KJVAnd he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.
And he brought them to his holy land, to the mountain which his right hand had won.
55
וַיְגָ֣רֶשׁ מִ֭פְּנֵיהֶם גּוֹיִ֑ם וַיַּ֥פִּילֵ֗ם בְּחֶ֣בֶל נַחֲלָ֣ה וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֣ן בְּאָהֳלֵיהֶ֖ם שִׁבְטֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
KJVHe cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.
He drove out nations before them; he apportioned them for a possession and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.
56
וַיְנַסּ֣וּ וַ֭יַּמְרוּ אֶת אֱלֹהִ֣ים עֶלְי֑וֹן וְ֝עֵדוֹתָ֗יו לֹ֣א שָׁמָֽרוּ׃
KJVYet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:
Yet they tested and rebelled against the Most High God and did not keep his testimonies,
57
וַ֭יִּסֹּגוּ וַיִּבְגְּד֣וּ כַאֲבוֹתָ֑ם נֶ֝הְפְּכ֗וּ כְּקֶ֣שֶׁת רְמִיָּֽה׃
KJVBut turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.
but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers; they twisted like a deceitful bow.
58
וַיַּכְעִיס֗וּהוּ בְּבָ֫מוֹתָ֥ם וּבִפְסִילֵיהֶ֥ם יַקְנִיאֽוּהוּ׃
KJVFor they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.
For they provoked him to anger with their high places; they moved him to jealousy with their idols.
59
שָׁמַ֣ע אֱלֹהִ֣ים וַיִּתְעַבָּ֑ר וַ֝יִּמְאַ֗ס מְאֹ֣ד בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
KJVWhen God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:
When God heard, he was full of wrath, and he utterly rejected Israel.
60
וַ֭יִּטֹּשׁ מִשְׁכַּ֣ן שִׁלֹ֑ה אֹ֥הֶל שִׁ֝כֵּ֗ן בָּאָדָֽם׃
KJVSo that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;
He forsook his dwelling at Shiloh, the tent where he dwelt among mankind,
61
וַיִּתֵּ֣ן לַשְּׁבִ֣י עֻזּ֑וֹ וְ֝תִפְאַרְתּ֗וֹ בְּיַד צָֽר׃
KJVAnd delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy's hand.
and delivered his power to captivity, his glory to the hand of the foe.
62
וַ֭יַּסְגֵּר לַחֶ֣רֶב עַמּ֑וֹ וּ֝בְנַחֲלָת֗וֹ הִתְעַבָּֽר׃
KJVHe gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.
He gave his people over to the sword and vented his wrath on his heritage.
63
בַּח֥וּרָיו אָכְלָה אֵ֑שׁ וּ֝בְתוּלֹתָ֗יו לֹ֣א הוּלָּֽלוּ׃
KJVThe fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.
Fire devoured their young men, and their young women had no marriage song.
64
כֹּהֲנָ֥יו בַּחֶ֗רֶב נָ֫פָ֥לוּ וְאַלְמְנֹ֥תָיו לֹ֣א תִבְכֶּֽינָה׃
KJVTheir priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.
Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows made no lamentation.

וַיִּקַּ֣ץ כְּיָשֵׁ֣ן אֲדֹנָ֑י כְּגִבּ֗וֹר מִתְרוֹנֵ֥ן מִיָּֽיִן׃
KJVThen the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.
Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, like a strong man shouting because of wine.

וַיַּ֣ךְ צָ֭רָיו אָח֑וֹר חֶרְפַּ֥ת ע֝וֹלָ֗ם נָ֣תַן לָֽמוֹ׃
KJVAnd he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.
And he put his adversaries to rout; he put them to everlasting shame.

וַיִּמְאַ֣ס בְּאֹ֣הֶל יוֹסֵ֑ף וּבְשֵׁ֥בֶט אֶ֝פְרַ֗יִם לֹ֣א בָחָֽר׃
KJVMoreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:
He rejected the tent of Joseph; he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,

וַיִּבְחַ֗ר אֶת שֵׁ֣בֶט יְ֭הוּדָה אֶת הַ֥ר צִ֗יּ֗וֹן אֲשֶׁ֣ר אָהֵֽב׃
KJVBut chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.
but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loves.

וַיִּ֣בֶן כְּמוֹ רָ֭מִים מִקְדָּשׁ֑וֹ כְּאֶ֥רֶץ יְ֝סָדָ֗הּ לְעוֹלָֽם׃
KJVAnd he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever.
He built his sanctuary like the high heavens, like the earth, which he has founded forever.

וַיִּבְחַ֗ר בְּ֭דָוִד עַבְדּ֑וֹ וַיִּקָּחֵ֥הוּ מִ֝מִּכְלְאֹ֗ת צֹֽאן׃
KJVHe chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:

מֵאַחַ֥ר עָל֗וֹת הֱבִיאוֹ֮ לִרְע֪וֹת בְּיַ֫עֲקֹ֥ב עַמּ֑וֹ וּ֝בְיִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל נַחֲלָתֽוֹ׃
KJVFrom following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.
from following the nursing ewes he brought him to shepherd Jacob his people, Israel his inheritance.

וַ֭יִּרְעֵם כְּתֹ֣ם לְבָב֑וֹ וּבִתְבוּנ֥וֹת כַּ֝פָּ֗יו יַנְחֵֽם׃
KJVSo he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.
With upright heart he shepherded them and guided them with his skillful hand.
