Mark 4:17

και ουκ εχουσιν ριζαν εν εαυτοις αλλα προσκαιροι εισιν ειτα γενομενης θλιψεως η διωγμου δια τον λογον ευθεως σκανδαλιζονται
kai oyk echoysin rizan en eaytois alla proskairoi eisin eita genomenēs thlipseōs ē diōgmoy dia ton logon eytheōs skandalizontai

And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended. {offended: or, stumbled, or, caused to fall into sin}

Modern English

They have no root in themselves, but are short-lived. When oppression or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they stumble.
