εν δε τη ημερα εκεινη εξελθων ο ιησους απο της οικιας εκαθητο παρα την θαλασσαν

KJVThe same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side.

On that day Jesus went out of the house, and sat by the seaside.

και συνηχθησαν προς αυτον οχλοι πολλοι ωστε αυτον εις το πλοιον εμβαντα καθησθαι και πας ο οχλος επι τον αιγιαλον ειστηκει

KJVAnd great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.

Great multitudes gathered to him, so that he entered into a boat, and sat, and all the multitude stood on the beach.

και ελαλησεν αυτοις πολλα εν παραβολαις λεγων ιδου εξηλθεν ο σπειρων του σπειρειν

KJVAnd he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;

He spoke to them many things in parables, saying, “Behold, a farmer went out to sow.

και εν τω σπειρειν αυτον α μεν επεσεν παρα την οδον και ηλθεν τα πετεινα και κατεφαγεν αυτα

KJVAnd when he sowed, some {seeds} fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:

As he sowed, some seeds fell by the roadside, and the birds came and devoured them.

αλλα δε επεσεν επι τα πετρωδη οπου ουκ ειχεν γην πολλην και ευθεως εξανετειλεν δια το μη εχειν βαθος γης

KJVSome fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:

Others fell on rocky ground, where they didn’t have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of earth.

ηλιου δε ανατειλαντος εκαυματισθη και δια το μη εχειν ριζαν εξηρανθη

KJVAnd when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.

When the sun had risen, they were scorched. Because they had no root, they withered away.

αλλα δε επεσεν επι τας ακανθας και ανεβησαν αι ακανθαι και απεπνιξαν αυτα

KJVAnd some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:

Others fell among thorns. The thorns grew up and choked them.

αλλα δε επεσεν επι την γην την καλην και εδιδου καρπον ο μεν εκατον ο δε εξηκοντα ο δε τριακοντα

KJVBut other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.

Others fell on good soil, and yielded fruit: some one hundred times as much, some sixty, and some thirty.

ο εχων ωτα ακουειν ακουετω

KJVWho hath ears to hear, let him hear.

He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

και προσελθοντες οι μαθηται ειπον αυτω δια τι εν παραβολαις λαλεις αυτοις

KJVAnd the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?

The disciples came, and said to him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?”

ο δε αποκριθεις ειπεν αυτοις οτι υμιν δεδοται γνωναι τα μυστηρια της βασιλειας των ουρανων εκεινοις δε ου δεδοται

KJVHe answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

He answered them, “To you it is given to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, but it is not given to them.

οστις γαρ εχει δοθησεται αυτω και περισσευθησεται οστις δε ουκ εχει και ο εχει αρθησεται απ αυτου

KJVFor whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.

For whoever has, to him will be given, and he will have abundance, but whoever doesn’t have, from him will be taken away even that which he has.

δια τουτο εν παραβολαις αυτοις λαλω οτι βλεποντες ου βλεπουσιν και ακουοντες ουκ ακουουσιν ουδε συνιουσιν

KJVTherefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.

Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they don’t see, and hearing, they don’t hear, neither do they understand.

και αναπληρουται επ αυτοις η προφητεια ησαιου η λεγουσα ακοη ακουσετε και ου μη συνητε και βλεποντες βλεψετε και ου μη ιδητε

KJVAnd in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:

In them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says, ‘By hearing you will hear, and will in no way understand; Seeing you will see, and will in no way perceive:

επαχυνθη γαρ η καρδια του λαου τουτου και τοις ωσιν βαρεως ηκουσαν και τους οφθαλμους αυτων εκαμμυσαν μηποτε ιδωσιν τοις οφθαλμοις και τοις ωσιν ακουσωσιν και τη καρδια συνωσιν και επιστρεψωσιν και ιασωμαι αυτους

KJVFor this people's heart is waxed gross, and {their} ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with {their} eyes, and hear with {their} ears, and should understand with {their} heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

for this people’s heart has grown callous, their ears are dull of hearing, they have closed their eyes; or else perhaps they might perceive with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and would turn again; and I would heal them.’

υμων δε μακαριοι οι οφθαλμοι οτι βλεπουσιν και τα ωτα υμων οτι ακουει

KJVBut blessed {are} your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

“But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear.

17

αμην γαρ λεγω υμιν οτι πολλοι προφηται και δικαιοι επεθυμησαν ιδειν α βλεπετε και ουκ ειδον και ακουσαι α ακουετε και ουκ ηκουσαν

KJVFor verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous {men} have desired to see {those things} which ye see, and have not seen {them}; and to hear {those things} which ye hear, and have not heard {them}.

For most certainly I tell you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see the things which you see, and didn’t see them; and to hear the things which you hear, and didn’t hear them.

υμεις ουν ακουσατε την παραβολην του σπειροντος

KJVHear ye therefore the parable of the sower.

“Hear, then, the parable of the farmer.

19

παντος ακουοντος τον λογον της βασιλειας και μη συνιεντος ερχεται ο πονηρος και αρπαζει το εσπαρμενον εν τη καρδια αυτου ουτος εστιν ο παρα την οδον σπαρεις

KJVWhen any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth {it} not, then cometh the wicked {one}, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.

When anyone hears the word of the Kingdom, and doesn’t understand it, the evil one comes, and snatches away that which has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown by the roadside.

ο δε επι τα πετρωδη σπαρεις ουτος εστιν ο τον λογον ακουων και ευθυς μετα χαρας λαμβανων αυτον

KJVBut he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;

What was sown on the rocky places, this is he who hears the word, and immediately with joy receives it;

ουκ εχει δε ριζαν εν εαυτω αλλα προσκαιρος εστιν γενομενης δε θλιψεως η διωγμου δια τον λογον ευθυς σκανδαλιζεται

KJVYet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. {offended: he relapseth, or, falleth into sin}

yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while. When oppression or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.

ο δε εις τας ακανθας σπαρεις ουτος εστιν ο τον λογον ακουων και η μεριμνα του αιωνος τουτου και η απατη του πλουτου συμπνιγει τον λογον και ακαρπος γινεται

KJVHe also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

What was sown among the thorns, this is he who hears the word, but the cares of this age and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.

ο δε επι την γην την καλην σπαρεις ουτος εστιν ο τον λογον ακουων και συνιων ος δη καρποφορει και ποιει ο μεν εκατον ο δε εξηκοντα ο δε τριακοντα

KJVBut he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth {it}; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

What was sown on the good ground, this is he who hears the word, and understands it, who most certainly bears fruit, and produces, some one hundred times as much, some sixty, and some thirty.”

αλλην παραβολην παρεθηκεν αυτοις λεγων ωμοιωθη η βασιλεια των ουρανων ανθρωπω σπειροντι σπειραντι καλον σπερμα εν τω αγρω αυτου

KJVAnother parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:

He set another parable before them, saying, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field,

εν δε τω καθευδειν τους ανθρωπους ηλθεν αυτου ο εχθρος και εσπειρεν ζιζανια ανα μεσον του σιτου και απηλθεν

KJVBut while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.

but while people slept, his enemy came and sowed darnel weeds also among the wheat, and went away.

οτε δε εβλαστησεν ο χορτος και καρπον εποιησεν τοτε εφανη και τα ζιζανια

KJVBut when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.

But when the blade sprang up and produced fruit, then the darnel weeds appeared also.

27

προσελθοντες δε οι δουλοι του οικοδεσποτου ειπον αυτω κυριε ουχι καλον σπερμα εσπειρας εν τω σω αγρω ποθεν ουν εχει τα ζιζανια

KJVSo the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?

The servants of the householder came and said to him, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where did these darnel weeds come from?’

ο δε εφη αυτοις εχθρος ανθρωπος τουτο εποιησεν οι δε δουλοι ειπον αυτω θελεις ουν απελθοντες συλλεξωμεν αυτα

KJVHe said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?

“He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and gather them up?’

ο δε εφη ου μηποτε συλλεγοντες τα ζιζανια εκριζωσητε αμα αυτοις τον σιτον

KJVBut he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.

“But he said, ‘No, lest perhaps while you gather up the darnel weeds, you root up the wheat with them.

αφετε συναυξανεσθαι αμφοτερα μεχρι του θερισμου και εν τω καιρω του θερισμου ερω τοις θερισταις συλλεξατε πρωτον τα ζιζανια και δησατε αυτα εις δεσμας προς το κατακαυσαι αυτα τον δε σιτον συναγαγετε εις την αποθηκην μου

KJVLet both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

Let both grow together until the harvest, and in the harvest time I will tell the reapers, “First, gather up the darnel weeds, and bind them in bundles to burn them; but gather the wheat into my barn.”’”

αλλην παραβολην παρεθηκεν αυτοις λεγων ομοια εστιν η βασιλεια των ουρανων κοκκω σιναπεως ον λαβων ανθρωπος εσπειρεν εν τω αγρω αυτου

KJVAnother parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field:

He set another parable before them, saying, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field;

ο μικροτερον μεν εστιν παντων των σπερματων οταν δε αυξηθη μειζον των λαχανων εστιν και γινεται δενδρον ωστε ελθειν τα πετεινα του ουρανου και κατασκηνουν εν τοις κλαδοις αυτου

KJVWhich indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.

which indeed is smaller than all seeds. But when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches.”

αλλην παραβολην ελαλησεν αυτοις ομοια εστιν η βασιλεια των ουρανων ζυμη ην λαβουσα γυνη ενεκρυψεν εις αλευρου σατα τρια εως ου εζυμωθη ολον

KJVAnother parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. {measures: the word in the Greek is a measure containing about a peck and a half, wanting a little more than a pint}

He spoke another parable to them. “The Kingdom of Heaven is like yeast, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, until it was all leavened.”

ταυτα παντα ελαλησεν ο ιησους εν παραβολαις τοις οχλοις και χωρις παραβολης ουκ ελαλει αυτοις

KJVAll these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them:

Jesus spoke all these things in parables to the multitudes; and without a parable, he didn’t speak to them,

οπως πληρωθη το ρηθεν δια του προφητου λεγοντος ανοιξω εν παραβολαις το στομα μου ερευξομαι κεκρυμμενα απο καταβολης κοσμου

KJVThat it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, “I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world.”

τοτε αφεις τους οχλους ηλθεν εις την οικιαν ο ιησους και προσηλθον αυτω οι μαθηται αυτου λεγοντες φρασον ημιν την παραβολην των ζιζανιων του αγρου

KJVThen Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field.

Then Jesus sent the multitudes away, and went into the house. His disciples came to him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the darnel weeds of the field.”

ο δε αποκριθεις ειπεν αυτοις ο σπειρων το καλον σπερμα εστιν ο υιος του ανθρωπου

KJVHe answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;

He answered them, “He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man,

38

ο δε αγρος εστιν ο κοσμος το δε καλον σπερμα ουτοι εισιν οι υιοι της βασιλειας τα δε ζιζανια εισιν οι υιοι του πονηρου

KJVThe field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked {one};

the field is the world; and the good seed, these are the children of the Kingdom; and the darnel weeds are the children of the evil one.

ο δε εχθρος ο σπειρας αυτα εστιν ο διαβολος ο δε θερισμος συντελεια του αιωνος εστιν οι δε θερισται αγγελοι εισιν

KJVThe enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.

The enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels.

40

ωσπερ ουν συλλεγεται τα ζιζανια και πυρι κατακαιεται ουτως εσται εν τη συντελεια του αιωνος τουτου

KJVAs therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.

As therefore the darnel weeds are gathered up and burned with fire; so will it be at the end of this age.

αποστελει ο υιος του ανθρωπου τους αγγελους αυτου και συλλεξουσιν εκ της βασιλειας αυτου παντα τα σκανδαλα και τους ποιουντας την ανομιαν

KJVThe Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; {things...: or, scandals}

The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will gather out of his Kingdom all things that cause stumbling, and those who do iniquity,

και βαλουσιν αυτους εις την καμινον του πυρος εκει εσται ο κλαυθμος και ο βρυγμος των οδοντων

KJVAnd shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

43

τοτε οι δικαιοι εκλαμψουσιν ως ο ηλιος εν τη βασιλεια του πατρος αυτων ο εχων ωτα ακουειν ακουετω

KJVThen shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the Kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

παλιν ομοια εστιν η βασιλεια των ουρανων θησαυρω κεκρυμμενω εν τω αγρω ον ευρων ανθρωπος εκρυψεν και απο της χαρας αυτου υπαγει και παντα οσα εχει πωλει και αγοραζει τον αγρον εκεινον

KJVAgain, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

“Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like treasure hidden in the field, which a man found, and hid. In his joy, he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field.

παλιν ομοια εστιν η βασιλεια των ουρανων ανθρωπω εμπορω ζητουντι καλους μαργαριτας

KJVAgain, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls:

“Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who is a merchant seeking fine pearls,

ος ευρων ενα πολυτιμον μαργαριτην απελθων πεπρακεν παντα οσα ειχεν και ηγορασεν αυτον

KJVWho, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

who having found one pearl of great price, he went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

παλιν ομοια εστιν η βασιλεια των ουρανων σαγηνη βληθειση εις την θαλασσαν και εκ παντος γενους συναγαγουση

KJVAgain, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind:

“Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a dragnet, that was cast into the sea, and gathered some fish of every kind,

ην οτε επληρωθη αναβιβασαντες επι τον αιγιαλον και καθισαντες συνελεξαν τα καλα εις αγγεια τα δε σαπρα εξω εβαλον

KJVWhich, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.

which, when it was filled, they drew up on the beach. They sat down, and gathered the good into containers, but the bad they threw away.

ουτως εσται εν τη συντελεια του αιωνος εξελευσονται οι αγγελοι και αφοριουσιν τους πονηρους εκ μεσου των δικαιων

KJVSo shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,

So will it be in the end of the world. The angels will come and separate the wicked from among the righteous,

και βαλουσιν αυτους εις την καμινον του πυρος εκει εσται ο κλαυθμος και ο βρυγμος των οδοντων

KJVAnd shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.”

λεγει αυτοις ο ιησους συνηκατε ταυτα παντα λεγουσιν αυτω ναι κυριε

KJVJesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord.

Jesus said to them, “Have you understood all these things?” They answered him, “Yes, Lord.”

ο δε ειπεν αυτοις δια τουτο πας γραμματευς μαθητευθεις εις την βασιλειαν των ουρανων ομοιος εστιν ανθρωπω οικοδεσποτη οστις εκβαλλει εκ του θησαυρου αυτου καινα και παλαια

KJVThen said he unto them, Therefore every scribe {which is} instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man {that is} an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure {things} new and old.

He said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been made a disciple in the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who is a householder, who brings out of his treasure new and old things.”

και εγενετο οτε ετελεσεν ο ιησους τας παραβολας ταυτας μετηρεν εκειθεν

KJVAnd it came to pass, {that} when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence.

When Jesus had finished these parables, he departed from there.

και ελθων εις την πατριδα αυτου εδιδασκεν αυτους εν τη συναγωγη αυτων ωστε εκπληττεσθαι αυτους και λεγειν ποθεν τουτω η σοφια αυτη και αι δυναμεις

KJVAnd when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this {man} this wisdom, and {these} mighty works?

Coming into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom, and these mighty works?

ουχ ουτος εστιν ο του τεκτονος υιος ουχι η μητηρ αυτου λεγεται μαριαμ και οι αδελφοι αυτου ιακωβος και ιωσης και σιμων και ιουδας

KJVIs not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?

Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother called Mary, and his brothers, James, Joses, Simon, and Judas?

και αι αδελφαι αυτου ουχι πασαι προς ημας εισιν ποθεν ουν τουτω ταυτα παντα

KJVAnd his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this {man} all these things?

Aren’t all of his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all of these things?”

57

και εσκανδαλιζοντο εν αυτω ο δε ιησους ειπεν αυτοις ουκ εστιν προφητης ατιμος ει μη εν τη πατριδι αυτου και εν τη οικια αυτου

KJVAnd they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.

They were offended by him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and in his own house.”

και ουκ εποιησεν εκει δυναμεις πολλας δια την απιστιαν αυτων

KJVAnd he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

He didn’t do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
