וַיַּעֲמֹ֥ד שָׂטָ֖ן עַל יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיָּ֙סֶת֙ אֶת דָּוִ֔יד לִמְנ֖וֹת אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

KJVAnd Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.

Then Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number Israel.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר דָּוִיד֙ אֶל יוֹאָ֔ב וְאֶ֖ל שָׂרֵ֣י הָעָ֑ם לְכ֗וּ סִפְר֤וּ אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ מִבְּאֵ֣ר שֶׁ֔בַע וְעַד דָּ֑ן וְהָבִ֥יאוּ אֵלַ֖י וְאֵדְעָ֥ה אֶת מִסְפָּרָֽם׃

KJVAnd David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.

So David said to Joab and the commanders of the army: Go, number Israel, from Beersheba to Dan, and bring me a report, that I may know their number.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יוֹאָ֡ב יוֹסֵ֣ף יְ֠הוָה עַ֣ל עַמּ֤וֹ כָהֵם֙ מֵאָ֣ה פְעָמִ֔ים הֲלֹ֤א אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ כֻּלָּ֣ם לַאדֹנִ֣י לַעֲבָדִ֔ים לָ֥מָּה יְבַקֵּ֛שׁ זֹ֥את אֲדֹנִ֖י לָ֣מָּה יִהְיֶ֥ה לְאַשְׁמָ֖ה לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

KJVAnd Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?

But Joab said: May the LORD add to his people a hundred times as many as they are! Are they not, my lord the king, all of them my lord's servants? Why then should my lord require this? Why should it be a cause of guilt for Israel?

וּדְבַ֤ר הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ חָזַ֣ק עַל יוֹאָ֔ב וַיֵּ֣צֵא יוֹאָ֔ב וַיִּתְהַלֵּ֖ךְ בְּכָל יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיָּבֹ֖א יְרוּשָׁלָֽ͏ִם׃

KJVNevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.

וַיִּתֵּ֣ן יוֹאָ֗ב אֶת מִסְפַּ֤ר מִפְקַד הָעָם֙ אֶל דָּוִ֔יד וַיְהִ֣י כָל יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אֶ֤לֶף אֲלָפִים֙ וּמֵ֣אָה אֶ֔לֶף אִ֖ישׁ שֹׁלֵ֣ף חָ֑רֶב וִֽיהוּדָ֕ה אַרְבַּ֥ע מֵאוֹת֙ וְשִׁבְעִ֣ים אֶ֔לֶף אִ֖ישׁ שֹׁלֵ֥ף חָֽרֶב׃

KJVAnd Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.

And Joab gave the sum of the numbering of the people to David. All Israel was 1,100,000 men who drew the sword, and Judah was 470,000 who drew the sword.

וְלֵוִ֥י וּבִנְיָמִ֖ן לֹ֣א פָקַ֑ד בְּ֠תוֹכָ֠ם כִּ֥י נִתְעַ֛ב דְּבַ֥ר הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶ֥ת יוֹאָֽב׃

KJVBut Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king's word was abominable to Joab.

But he did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, for the king's command was abhorrent to Joab.

וַיֵּ֥רַע בְּעֵינֵ֖י הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים עַל הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּ֖ה וַיַּ֥ךְ אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

KJVAnd God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.

But God was displeased with this thing, and he struck Israel.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר דָּוִיד֙ אֶל הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים חָטָ֣אתִי מְאֹ֔ד אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתִי הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה וְעַתָּ֗ה הַעֲבֶר נָא֙ אֶת עֲוֹ֣ן עַבְדֶּ֔ךָ כִּ֥י נִסְכַּ֖לְתִּי מְאֹֽד׃

KJVAnd David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

And David said to God: I have sinned greatly in that I have done this thing. But now, please take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶ֣ל גָּ֥ד חֹזֵ֥ה דָוִ֖יד לֵאמֹֽר׃

KJVAnd the LORD spake unto Gad, David's seer, saying,

And the LORD spoke to Gad, David's seer, saying,

לֵ֤ךְ וְדִבַּרְתָּ֙ אֶל דָּוִ֔יד לֵאמֹ֑ר כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה שָׁל֗וֹשׁ אֲנִ֣י נֹטֶ֣ה עָלֶ֑יךָ בְּחַ֤ר לְךָ֙ אַחַ֣ת מֵהֵ֔ן וְאֶעֱשֶׂ֖ה לָֽךְ׃

KJVGo and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

Go and say to David: Thus says the LORD, Three things I offer you; choose one of them, that I may do it to you.

וַיָּבֹ֥א גָ֖ד אֶל דָּוִ֑יד וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה קַבֶּל לָֽךְ׃

KJVSo Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee

So Gad came to David and said to him: Thus says the LORD, Choose what you will:

אוֹ שָׁלֹשׁ֩ שָׁנִ֨ים רָעָ֜ב אוֹ שְׁלֹשָׁ֤ה חֳדָשִׁים֙ נִסְפֶּה לִפְנֵי צָרֶ֑יךָ וְחֶ֣רֶב אוֹיְבֶ֣יךָ לְמַשִּׂ֣יג אוֹ שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה יָמִ֡ים חֶ֣רֶב יְהוָ֤ה וְדֶ֙בֶר֙ בָּאָ֔רֶץ וּמַלְאַ֤ך יְהוָה֙ מַשְׁחִ֔ית בְּכָל גְּב֖וּל יִשְׂרָאֵֽל עַתָּה רְאֵ֗ה מָ֥ה אָשִׁ֛יב אֶת שֹׁלְחִ֖י דָּבָֽר׃

KJVEither three years' famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.

either three years of famine, or three months of devastation by your foes while the sword of your enemies overtakes you, or else three days of the sword of the LORD, pestilence on the land, with the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the territory of Israel. Now decide what answer I shall return to him who sent me.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר דָּוִיד֙ אֶ֣ל גָּ֔ד צַר לִ֖י מְאֹ֑ד אֶפֶּ֨ל נָ֜א בְּיַד יְהוָ֗ה כִּ֙י רַבִּ֥ים רַחֲמָ֛יו מְאֹ֖ד וּבְיַד אָדָ֥ם לֹא אֶפֹּֽל׃

KJVAnd David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.

And David said to Gad: I am in great distress. Let me fall into the hand of the LORD, for his mercy is very great, but do not let me fall into the hand of man.

וַיִּתֵּ֧ן יְהוָ֛ה דֶּ֖בֶר בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיִּפֹּ֥ל מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֖ל שִׁבְעִ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף אִֽישׁ׃

KJVSo the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.

So the LORD sent a pestilence on Israel, and 70,000 men of Israel fell.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח הָאֱלֹהִ֜ים מַלְאָ֣ךְ לִ֠ירוּשָׁלַ͏ִם לְהַשְׁחִיתָ֗הּ וּכְהַשְׁחִית֙ רָאָ֣ה יְהוָ֔ה וַיִּנָּחֶ֕ם עַל הָרָעָ֖ה וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לַמַּלְאָ֛ךְ הַמַּשְׁחִ֖ית רַ֑ב עַתָּה֙ הֶ֣רֶף יָדֶ֔ךָ וּמַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֔ה עֹמֵ֖ד עִ֖ם גֹּ֥רֶן אָרְנָ֖ן הַיְבוּסִֽי׃

KJVAnd God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

And God sent the angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, but as he was about to destroy it, the LORD saw, and he relented from the calamity. And he said to the angel who was destroying: It is enough; now stay your hand. And the angel of the LORD was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

וַיִּשָּׂ֨א דָוִ֜יד אֶת עֵינָ֗יו וַיַּ֙רְא֙ אֶת מַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֔ה עֹמֵ֗ד בֵּ֤ין הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ וּבֵ֣ין הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וְחַרְבּ֛וֹ שְׁלוּפָ֥ה בְיָד֖וֹ נְטוּיָ֣ה עַל יְרוּשָׁלָ֑͏ִם וַיִּפֹּ֥ל דָּוִ֛יד וְהַזְּקֵנִ֖ים מְכֻסִּ֥ים בַּשַּׂקִּ֖ים עַ֥ל פְּנֵיהֶֽם׃

KJVAnd David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר דָּוִ֣יד אֶ֣ל הָֽאֱלֹהִ֡ים הֲל֡וֹא אֲנִ֣י אָמַ֣רְתִּי לִמְנ֣וֹת בָּ֠עָ֠ם וַאֲנִ֤י הוּא֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר חָטָ֔אתִי וְהָרֵ֣עַ הֲרֵע֔וֹתִי וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ הַצֹּ֣אן מֶ֣ה עָשׂ֑וּ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהַ֗י תְּהִי נָ֤א יָדְךָ֙ בִּ֣י וּבְבֵ֣ית אָבִ֔י וּבְעַמְּךָ֖ לֹ֥א לְמַגֵּפָֽה׃

KJVAnd David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father's house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.

And David said to God: Was it not I who gave command to number the people? It is I who have sinned and done great evil. But these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O LORD my God, be against me and against my father's house. But do not let the plague be on your people.

וּמַלְאַ֤ךְ יְהוָה֙ אָמַ֔ר אֶ֖ל גָּ֑ד לֵאמֹ֗ר לְדָוִ֙יד֙ כִּ֣י יַעֲלֶ֣ה דָוִ֔יד לְהָקִ֤ים מִזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ לַ֣יהוָ֔ה בְּגֹ֖רֶן אָרְנָ֥ן הַיְבוּסִֽי׃

KJVThen the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David that David should go up and erect an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

וַיַּ֤עַל דָּוִיד֙ בִּדְבַ֣ר גָּ֔ד אֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבֶּ֖ר בְּשֵׁ֣ם יְהוָ֑ה׃

KJVAnd David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the LORD.

So David went up at Gad's word, which he had spoken in the name of the LORD.

וַיָּ֤שָׁב אָרְנָן֙ וַיַּ֣רְא אֶת הַמַּלְאָ֔ךְ וְאַרְבַּ֥עַת בָּנָ֖יו עִמּ֑וֹ מִֽתְחַבְּאִ֖ים וְאָרְנָ֥ן דָּשׁ֥ חִטִּֽים׃

KJVAnd Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.

Now Ornan was threshing wheat. He turned and saw the angel, and his four sons who were with him hid themselves.

וַיָּ֤בֹא דָוִיד֙ עַד אָרְנָ֔ן וַיַּבֵּ֣ט אָרְנָ֔ן וַיַּ֥רְא אֶת דָּוִ֖יד וַיֵּצֵ֛א מִן הַגֹּ֖רֶן וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ לְדָוִ֖יד אַפַּ֥יִם אָֽרְצָה׃

KJVAnd as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.

As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David and went out from the threshing floor and paid homage to David with his face to the ground.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר דָּוִיד֙ אֶ֣ל אָרְנָ֔ן תְּנָ֣ה לִ֔י אֶת מְקוֹ֖ם הַגֹּ֑רֶן וְאֶבְנֶה בּ֣וֹ מִזְבֵּ֣חַ לַ֣יהוָ֑ה בְּכֶ֤סֶף מָלֵא֙ תְּנֶ֣הוּ לִ֔י וְתֵֽעָצַ֥ר הַמַּגֵּפָ֖ה מֵעַ֥ל הָעָֽם׃

KJVThen David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.

And David said to Ornan: Give me the site of the threshing floor that I may build on it an altar to the LORD — give it to me at its full price — that the plague may be averted from the people.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אָרְנָ֣ן אֶ֣ל דָּוִ֡יד קַח לָ֣ךְ וְיַעֲשֶׂ֣ה אֲדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ הַטּ֣וֹב בְּעֵינָ֗יו רְאֵ֡ה נָ֣תַתִּי הַבָּקָ֣ר לָ֣עֹל֗וֹת וְהַ֣מּוֹרִגִּים֙ לָ֣עֵצִ֔ים וְהַחִטִּ֖ים לַמִּנְחָ֑ה הַכֹּ֖ל נָתָֽתִּי׃

KJVAnd Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.

And Ornan said to David: Take it, and let my lord the king do what seems good to him. See, I give the oxen for burnt offerings and the threshing sledges for the wood and the wheat for a grain offering; I give it all.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ דָּוִיד֙ לְאָרְנָ֔ן לֹ֕א כִּ֣י קָנ֥וֹ אֶקְנֶ֖ה בְּכֶ֣סֶף מָלֵ֑א כִּ֣י לֹ֣א אֶשָּׂ֣א אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְ֠ךָ֠ לַ֣יהוָ֔ה וְהַעֲל֥וֹת עוֹלָ֖ה חִנָּֽם׃

KJVAnd king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.

But King David said to Ornan: No, but I will buy them for the full price. I will not take for the LORD what is yours, nor offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.

וַיִּתֵּ֤ן דָּוִיד֙ לְאָרְנָ֔ן בַּמָּק֖וֹם שְׁקָלִ֣ים זָהָ֑ב מִשְׁקַ֥ל שֵׁשׁ מֵא֖וֹת׃

KJVSo David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.

So David paid Ornan 600 shekels of gold by weight for the site.

וַיִּבֶן שָׁ֣ם דָּוִ֣יד מִזְבֵּ֣חַ לַ֣יהוָ֑ה וַיַּ֨עַל עֹל֜וֹת וּשְׁלָמִ֗ים וַיִּקְרָ֛א אֶל יְהוָ֖ה וַיַּעֲנֵ֣הוּ בָאֵ֔שׁ מִן הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם עַ֥ל מִזְבַּ֥ח הָעֹלָֽה׃

KJVAnd David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the LORD; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering.

And David built there an altar to the LORD and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings and called on the LORD, and the LORD answered him with fire from heaven upon the altar of burnt offering.

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר יְהוָ֛ה לַמַּלְאָ֖ךְ וַיָּ֣שֶׁב חַרְבּ֑וֹ אֶל נְדָנָֽהּ׃

KJVAnd the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.

And the LORD commanded the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.

בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֗יא בִּרְאוֹת֩ דָּוִ֨יד כִּ֚י עָנָה ל֣וֹ יְהוָ֔ה בְּגֹ֖רֶן אָרְנָ֣ן הַיְבוּסִ֑י וַיִּזְבַּ֖ח שָֽׁם׃

KJVAt that time when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.
