Οὐ θέλω δὲ ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν, ἀδελφοί, ὅτι οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν πάντες ὑπὸ τὴν νεφέλην ἦσαν, καὶ πάντες διὰ τῆς θαλάσσης διῆλθον,

KJVMoreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea.

καὶ πάντες εἰς τὸν Μωϋσῆν ἐβαπτίσαντο ἐν τῇ νεφέλῃ καὶ ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ,

KJVAnd were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.

καὶ πάντες τὸ αὐτὸ βρῶμα πνευματικὸν ἔφαγον,

KJVAnd did all eat the same spiritual meat;

They all ate the same spiritual food

καὶ πάντες τὸ αὐτὸ πόμα πνευματικὸν ἔπιον· ἔπινον γὰρ ἐκ πνευματικῆς ἀκολουθούσης πέτρας· ἡ δὲ πέτρα ἦν ὁ Χριστός.

KJVAnd did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.

Ἀλλ' οὐκ ἐν τοῖς πλείοσιν αὐτῶν εὐδόκησεν ὁ Θεός· κατεστρώθησαν γὰρ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ.

KJVBut with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.

Ταῦτα δὲ τύποι ἡμῶν ἐγενήθησαν, εἰς τὸ μὴ εἶναι ἡμᾶς ἐπιθυμητὰς κακῶν, καθὼς κἀκεῖνοι ἐπεθύμησαν.

KJVNow these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.

Μηδὲ εἰδωλολάτραι γίνεσθε, καθώς τινες αὐτῶν· ὥσπερ γέγραπται, Ἐκάθισεν ὁ λαὸς φαγεῖν καὶ πιεῖν, καὶ ἀνέστησαν παίζειν.

KJVNeither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.

Μηδὲ πορνεύωμεν, καθώς τινες αὐτῶν ἐπόρνευσαν, καὶ ἔπεσον ἐν μιᾷ ἡμέρᾳ εἴκοσι τρεῖς χιλιάδες.

KJVNeither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did — and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.

Μηδὲ ἐκπειράζωμεν τὸν Χριστόν, καθὼς καί τινες αὐτῶν ἐπείρασαν, καὶ ὑπὸ τῶν ὄφεων ἀπώλοντο.

KJVNeither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.

We should not test Christ, as some of them did — and were killed by snakes.

Μηδὲ γογγύζετε, καθὼς καί τινες αὐτῶν ἐγόγγυσαν, καὶ ἀπώλοντο ὑπὸ τοῦ ὀλοθρευτοῦ.

KJVNeither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.

And do not grumble, as some of them did — and were killed by the destroying angel.

Ταῦτα δὲ πάντα τύποι συνέβαινον ἐκείνοις· ἐγράφη δὲ πρὸς νουθεσίαν ἡμῶν, εἰς οὓς τὰ τέλη τῶν αἰώνων κατήντησεν.

KJVNow all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.

Ὥστε ὁ δοκῶν ἑστάναι, βλεπέτω μὴ πέσῃ.

KJVWherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!

πειρασμὸς ὑμᾶς οὐκ εἴληφεν εἰ μὴ ἀνθρώπινος· πιστὸς δὲ ὁ Θεός, ὃς οὐκ ἐάσει ὑμᾶς πειρασθῆναι ὑπὲρ ὃ δύνασθε, ἀλλὰ ποιήσει σὺν τῷ πειρασμῷ καὶ τὴν ἔκβασιν, τοῦ δύνασθαι ὑμᾶς ὑπενεγκεῖν.

KJVThere hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

Διόπερ, ἀγαπητοί μου, φεύγετε ἀπὸ τῆς εἰδωλολατρείας.

KJVWherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.

15

Ὡς φρονίμοις λέγω, κρίνατε ὑμεῖς ὅ φημι.

KJVI speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.

I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.

Τὸ ποτήριον τῆς εὐλογίας ὃ εὐλογοῦμεν, οὐχὶ κοινωνία τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐστίν; Τὸν ἄρτον ὃν κλῶμεν, οὐχὶ κοινωνία τοῦ σώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐστίν;

KJVThe cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?

Ὅτι εἷς ἄρτος, ἓν σῶμα, οἱ πολλοί ἐσμεν· οἱ γὰρ πάντες ἐκ τοῦ ἑνὸς ἄρτου μετέχομεν.

KJVFor we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf.

Βλέπετε τὸν Ἰσραὴλ κατὰ σάρκα· οὐχὶ οἱ ἐσθίοντες τὰς θυσίας κοινωνοὶ τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου εἰσίν;

KJVBehold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?

Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?

Τί οὖν φημι; Ὅτι εἴδωλόν τί ἐστιν; Ἢ ὅτι εἰδωλόθυτόν τί ἐστιν;

KJVWhat say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?

Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?

Ἀλλ' ὅτι ἃ θύει τὰ ἔθνη, δαιμονίοις θύει, καὶ οὐ Θεῷ· οὐ θέλω δὲ ὑμᾶς κοινωνοὺς τῶν δαιμονίων γίνεσθαι.

KJVBut I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons.

Οὐ δύνασθε ποτήριον Κυρίου πίνειν καὶ ποτήριον δαιμονίων· οὐ δύνασθε τραπέζης Κυρίου μετέχειν καὶ τραπέζης δαιμονίων.

KJVYe cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord's table and the table of demons.

Ἢ παραζηλοῦμεν τὸν Κύριον; Μὴ ἰσχυρότεροι αὐτοῦ ἐσμέν;

KJVDo we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

Are we trying to arouse the Lord's jealousy? Are we stronger than he?

23

Πάντα μοι ἔξεστιν, ἀλλ' οὐ πάντα συμφέρει. Πάντα μοι ἔξεστιν, ἀλλ' οὐ πάντα οἰκοδομεῖ.

KJVAll things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

I have the right to do anything, you say — but not everything is beneficial. I have the right to do anything — but not everything is constructive.

Μηδεὶς τὸ ἑαυτοῦ ζητείτω, ἀλλὰ τὸ τοῦ ἑτέρου ἕκαστος.

KJVLet no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.

No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.

25

Πᾶν τὸ ἐν μακέλλῳ πωλούμενον ἐσθίετε, μηδὲν ἀνακρίνοντες διὰ τὴν συνείδησιν·

KJVWhatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:

Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,

Τοῦ γὰρ Κυρίου ἡ γῆ καὶ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτῆς.

KJVFor the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.

for, The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it.

27

Εἰ δέ τις καλεῖ ὑμᾶς τῶν ἀπίστων, καὶ θέλετε πορεύεσθαι, πᾶν τὸ παρατιθέμενον ὑμῖν ἐσθίετε, μηδὲν ἀνακρίνοντες διὰ τὴν συνείδησιν.

KJVIf any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.

If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience.

Ἐὰν δέ τις ὑμῖν εἴπῃ, Τοῦτο εἰδωλόθυτόν ἐστιν, μὴ ἐσθίετε δι' ἐκεῖνον τὸν μηνύσαντα καὶ τὴν συνείδησιν· Τοῦ γὰρ Κυρίου ἡ γῆ καὶ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτῆς.

KJVBut if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:

But if someone says to you, This has been offered in sacrifice, then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience.

Συνείδησιν δὲ λέγω, οὐχὶ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ, ἀλλὰ τὴν τοῦ ἑτέρου· ἵνα τί γὰρ ἡ ἐλευθερία μου κρίνεται ὑπὸ ἄλλης συνειδήσεως;

KJVConscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?

I am referring to the other person's conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom being judged by another's conscience?

Εἰ ἐγὼ χάριτι μετέχω, τί βλασφημοῦμαι ὑπὲρ οὗ ἐγὼ εὐχαριστῶ;

KJVFor if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?

If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?

εἴτε οὖν ἐσθίετε, εἴτε πίνετε, εἴτε τι ποιεῖτε, πάντα εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ ποιεῖτε.

KJVWhether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

Ἀπρόσκοποι γίνεσθε καὶ Ἰουδαίοις καὶ Ἕλλησιν καὶ τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ·

KJVGive none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God —

καθὼς κἀγὼ πάντα πᾶσιν ἀρέσκω, μὴ ζητῶν τὸ ἐμαυτοῦ συμφέρον, ἀλλὰ τὸ τῶν πολλῶν, ἵνα σωθῶσιν.

KJVEven as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.
